Kröpelin is located between the Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock, approximately 12 km from the Baltic Sea. The wooded ridge of Kühlung stretches between Kröpelin and Kühlungsborn; the Diedrichshagen Hills reach 129.7 m above sea level.
Geographical Location
Kröpelin is an independent small town and a basic centre in the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The Baltic Sea resorts of Kühlungsborn, Heiligendamm and Rerik are nearby. Kröpelin has access to the A20 motorway and the B105 road and has a rail connection.
Culture and History
Kröpelin has two publicly operated museums and a public library. Settlement in present-day Kröpelin has been documented since AD 500; the town’s name was first recorded in 1177 as “Crapelin”. The village church is recorded in 1186 as being owned by Doberan Abbey, and the settlement developed into a regular east–west-oriented town plan.
The surrounding area of Kröpelin is home to Doberan Abbey, the church in Biendorf, the church of Alt Karin and St. John’s Church in Kühlungsborn.
