Mosaic Trail, Architecture and Manor Park
The “Štetlo paieškos Švėkšnoje” Mosaic Trail leads past artistic mosaics set into Švėkšna’s pavements. The works offer insights into the town’s history, its Jewish community and local figures. In this way, the trail connects public art with themes from the town’s history. Taking a closer look at the mosaics provides insight in particular into the history of the local Jewish community.
Various historic features have been preserved in the Manor Park. These include the main gates with sections of fencing and garden gates with remnants of a stone wall. A statue of Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, stands on an island in the pond; other features include a restored sundial, a vase on a pedestal and a circular viewing platform with a balustrade. The park also has a staircase with vases, a statue of the Virgin Mary, the “Laisvės angelas” and small footbridges.
The architectural ensemble also includes a gate in the Classicist style at the main entrance to the park, as well as the manor villa “Genovaitė”. Built in 1880, it is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style. A pedestrian viaduct over the road connects the park with the churchyard of the Church of St James the Greater.
Exhibition and 3D Reality Tour
Since 2005, the “Švėkšnas” exhibition has been housed in new premises in the Švėkšna “Saulės” Gymnasium building. Four rooms cover ethnography, archaeology, the history of the manor and the history of the town. Exhibition topics may change. If you are planning a visit, check with the museum for the current visitor arrangements.
The augmented reality 3D tour takes place in the Švėkšna synagogue. Participants use a smart device to scan their surroundings and view the resulting augmented reality images. If this activity is important to your plans, ask the museum about its current availability and how to book.
Market, Cycling Route and Traditional Crafts
There is a paved market square in the centre, where a market is held every Thursday. If you are planning your visit around market day, it is advisable to check the date in advance. If you are interested in a cycling trip, “Grafų Pliaterių takais” is a named route; the recommended starting point is the churchyard of the Church of St James the Greater in the centre.
The Traditional Crafts Centre offers educational activities in traditional crafts, including weaving a straw garden or a straw ornament. These activities must be booked in advance. You can also enquire there about the “Paprūsės skoniai” tasting. It includes soup, Kastinys and homemade bread kvass. This lets you choose between historical themes, a cycling trip, and craft or culinary activities when planning your trip; the booking or enquiry arrangements mentioned above apply to the latter options.
