Coastal Scenery and Birutė Park
Birutė Hill rises 21 metres above sea level and offers a view of the sea. Birutė Park was laid out on the site of the former Birutė Forest and Birutė Hill. The landscape and the park’s history are closely linked, though the experiences are distinct: the hill offers a sea view, while the park’s origins lie in the forest and the hill.
In summer, free concerts by the professional Palanga Orchestra are traditionally held three times a week in the rotunda at Birutė Park: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. If you plan your stay for the warmer months, this programme offers a specific musical event to enjoy. Museums and Art in Palanga
The Palanga Amber Museum is dedicated to amber and its inclusions. It has one of the world’s largest collections of amber inclusions and unique amber objects, with more than 30,000 exhibits in total. The Palanga Resort Museum preserves, researches and presents museum treasures, important collections of Palanga’s visual heritage, and cultural treasures discovered during archaeological research in Palanga. Its programme includes contemporary and historical exhibitions from Lithuania and abroad. The building has wide passageways and a lift. The museum thus offers access both to Palanga’s visual heritage and to exhibitions with a range of historical connections.
At Palanga Sculpture Park, you can see 28 sculptures that a Lithuanian art museum transferred to the Palanga municipal administration. Since the chessboard was renovated in 2020, you can also play giant outdoor chess there. The Antanas Mončys Art Museum offers a different way to experience art: visitors are allowed to touch the sculptures. More than 200 sculptures, drawings, graphic works, collages, pipes and masks are exhibited on the second floor.
Events and Active Experiences
The Palanga Cultural Centre at the Palanga Kurhaus hosts more than 250 different events each year. These include concerts, celebrations of national and calendar holidays, and festivals. Performances and non-commercial films are shown in the theatre hall at the Palanga Kurhaus, which is also used for conferences and rehearsals. During the warmer months, the Musical Fountain entertains visitors with music, light and water. These offerings each have a different focus: stage performances, events, and the interplay of sound and light.
For active days, Palanga has several cycle routes along the resort and coast. Together, they stretch for several dozen kilometres. Another way to explore the town is through walking orienteering games: participants solve puzzles, discover hidden details and answer questions as they follow the route. If you would rather combine cultural activities with educational content, the Palanga Burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas Museum organises guided tours, educational activities and creative workshops for schoolchildren and young people.
Church, Views and Getting Around
The Palanga Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Neo-Gothic church. Its features include an impressive pulpit and three artistically designed altars with French marble reliefs. The tower has an observation platform with a bird’s-eye view of the Palanga cityscape and the sea. Admission to the platform is free; access is not permitted during services, weddings or other ceremonies.
Jonas Basanavičius Street is Palanga’s central street and the main street leading to the pier. As a local landmark, it complements the view from the church tower by helping you find your way around town. Palanga International Airport is seven kilometres from Palanga city centre.
