Discover Svencelė on the Curonian Lagoon

On the shore of the Curonian Lagoon, Svencelė offers different perspectives to consider when choosing a Baltic Sea destination: a coastal cycling route runs through the area, while protected nature and a yacht harbour add further points of interest.

Cycling through Svencelė

The 115 km coastal cycling route (Route III) runs from Klaipėda to Rusnė and passes through Svencelė along the way. The 115 km figure refers to the entire route, not to a stage within the area. This places Svencelė along a longer coastal connection. If cycling is to be a key part of your Baltic Sea stay, the route offers a concrete factor to consider when choosing your destination. Water, dunes and protected nature

On the shore of the Curonian Lagoon near Svencelė, expansive stretches of water meet extensive sand dunes and pristine, dense forests. This offers a different focus when choosing an area than route length: here, the coastal landscape shapes its character.

One distinctive natural feature is the Svencelės II ąžuolas. The oak was placed under protection in 2025, is 32 m tall and has a trunk circumference of 4.6 m. Height and trunk circumference are two different measurements of the same tree, making this particular natural feature tangible.

The Svencelės pelkė is part of the Svencelės telmologinis draustinis, a 1,206 ha protected area extending across Klaipėda and Šilutė district municipalities. The area figure refers to the entire protected area. Alongside the measurements of a single protected tree, this brings the wider geographical context of a protected area into focus as a nature-related feature. Taken together, the figures show two different geographical scales: the 115 km refers to the route between Klaipėda and Rusnė, while the 1,206 ha is the area of the protected site, which extends across two district municipalities. This puts a route and an area side by side as points of reference.

Visits to the Svencelės pelkė are prohibited from 1 April to 1 August, except in cases provided for by the Lithuanian Law on Special Conditions of Land Use. If you are planning a visit, check the current rules in advance.

A maritime aspect to consider when choosing a destination

Svencele Dunes Yacht Harbour was commissioned on 1 July 2022 as privately funded infrastructure on the shore of the Curonian Lagoon. The date indicates when it began operating; its location on the lagoon adds a maritime aspect to the area.
