Orrefors: Glass History, Craftsmanship and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Orrefors
Orrefors can be explored through its glass history and industrial heritage. In addition, there is a 9.5-kilometre hiking trail, opportunities to try glassblowing and a cafĂ© serving crĂȘpes and fika. Depending on your travel interests, you can therefore shape your stay around culture, activities or culinary enjoyment.
Glass and Industrial History in Orrefors
The Orrefors Museum is located in the centre of Orrefors and displays a historic glass collection from Orrefors glasbruk in its exhibition hall. Next to the museum is a glass shop with books and unique second-choice glass objects from the heyday of Orrefors glasbruk. Anyone interested in design, craftsmanship and the development of glass production will find a tangible way to access the history of the place here.
Orrefors is one of the glassworks in Glasriket that gained international recognition for their innovative and experimental design language. This connection between place, material and design shapes the cultural focus of a visit. Visitors can also try glassblowing in Orrefors Park. The park is also home to a well-preserved industrial setting that vividly complements the historic character of glass production.
Hammarsmedjan and Historical Traces
Another focal point is Hammarsmedjan, with its associated spark furnace and old glassworks building. It has been protected as a listed building since 2007. The buildings around Hammarsmedjan, including the spark furnace and water channels, date from the 1840s. Following volunteer work and extensive renovations, Hammarsmedjan reopened as a living museum in 2014. The association at Hammarsmedjan offers guided tours and puts the machinery into operation.
Hammarsmedjan, a water wheel and the long wooden buildings of the forge have also been preserved as historical traces in Orrefors. Orrefors is one of four areas in Nybro Municipality designated as areas of national interest for cultural landscape conservation. This designation places the area in a broader cultural and historical context, without requiring you to limit your visit to a single museum.
Hiking Trail and Practical Choices
The Orrefors hiking trail is 9.5 kilometres long. Take this distance into account when planning your day if you would like to supplement your cultural visit with some exercise. Around the Orrefors hiking trail, some paths are accessible, for example, with a pram. If you are travelling with a pram, you can take this information into account when choosing individual paths; however, it does not automatically describe the entire hiking trail.
When choosing accommodation, the key consideration is therefore which priority matters most to you: the historic glass collection, Hammarsmedjan, glassblowing in Orrefors Park or a hike. The area also offers a suitable culinary stop: The Glassblower CafĂ© & CrĂȘperie serves savoury and sweet crĂȘpes as well as coffee, fika and other drinks.
