Rohuneeme combines a diverse coastal landscape with nature trails and a multifaceted local history. The Rohuneeme maastikukaitseala covers 243.6 hectares and stretches from forests to rocky and sandy coastal areas. Forest Trail to the Coast

The Loodusmetsa matkarada nature forest trail offers a particularly varied experience. It leads from Rohuneeme tee, near a large erratic boulder, over or around the ski hill to Kuusiku Bay and the coast of the headland. Along the way, the trail passes through different forest communities, thereby combining forest and coastal landscapes in a single route. The coastal section is approximately 2 km long. You can use the Loodusmetsa matkarada on foot and by bicycle; in winter, it is also accessible by skis.

The diverse birdlife of the Rohuneeme maastikukaitseala is another part of the nature experience. Both common and rarer bird species can be found there. Anyone who wants to experience the landscape not only through the beach but also through forests, coastal formations, and wildlife observation has another reason to explore the area at a leisurely pace.

Sandy Beach on Muuga Bay

Otilõuka rand beach lies on the eastern shore of Rohuneeme and opens onto Muuga Bay. As a sandy beach, it provides a clear coastal contrast to the protected area's rocky sections. Eight parking spaces are available for visitors. There is also a changing room, but no toilets. This specific infrastructure is useful to know before visiting the beach and distinguishes Otilõuka rand from a mere nature trail without designated beach facilities.

Chapel, Cemetery, and Swedish Heritage

Rohuneeme can also be understood through its history. The first written records of the Rohuneeme Chapel date from 1569. The present-day chapel was rebuilt in 1921 on the Estonian mainland in Rohuneeme after being dismantled on Aegna. The older section of Rohuneeme Cemetery is protected as a heritage site.

For centuries, Rohuneeme was part of the traditional settlement area of the coastal Swedes. As a result, its cultural heritage was shaped by Estonian and Swedish influences, which can still be recognized today in place names and local histories. The more recent past is also present: the Forest Trail passes through a former Soviet military site in Rohuneeme. The Rohuneeme raketibaas was built in the 1960s during Soviet rule to test and launch rockets that formed part of the military developments of the Cold War.

Trails for Running and Winter Days

The Rohuneeme health trail is an unlit running route ranging from 1 to 5 km in length. It begins at the Rohuneeme Cemetery car park and can be reached via Kalmistu tee up to the barrier. In nearby Püünsi, the Rohuneeme recreation area also has 1 km, 2.5 km, and 6 km-long health and ski tracks. This provides both a local running trail and several health and ski tracks for different distance preferences.

Another option is a guided Wanderlust hike on the Viimsi Peninsula. It follows the Baltic coast and includes searching for large erratic boulders; it usually lasts 2–3 hours. Another guided hike with Wanderlust passes through moss-covered ruins in the former Soviet border zone and to a former facility for storing nuclear warheads, which can be explored. The two options focus on different combinations of coastal landscapes, erratic boulders, and historic military architecture.
