Salmistu – Bay, Harbor and Nature Experiences

Salmistu combines a sea bay on the coast of Kolga with a harbor, a bathing area and protected coastal landscapes. Salmistu Bay lies between the headlands of Salmistu and Tsitre. At the same time, Salmistu is a holiday destination in the Salmistu-Valkla recreation area and is therefore part of a coastal setting where beach stays, nature observation and maritime themes can be combined.

Coast and Protected Nature

The Kolga Bay Landscape Protection Area includes the village of Salmistu. Protected animals include the gray seal (Halichoerus grypus). This combination of village and protected area makes the bay a place where the coastal landscape can be experienced not only as a bathing environment but also as a habitat.

For classic days by the water, Salmistu rand is one of the bathing and swimming spots in the Kuusalu tourism area. Those who consider proximity to different coastal experiences when choosing accommodation will therefore find not only the bay here, but also a beach specifically listed as a bathing and swimming spot. Pedassaar Island offers a different perspective: It can be reached by boat from Salmistu Harbor. On Pedassaar, the hiking trail has 11 information points about the island’s coast, coastal types and zones, as well as vegetation. The trail thus combines the island with a thematic exploration of the coastal landscape.

Harbor, Islands and Seal Watching

The harbor is a distinct part of a stay in Salmistu. Drinking water, electricity and a toilet are available there for guests arriving by sea. A multifunctional building was also completed at the harbor in autumn 2025. It was built to promote local fishing and seafaring traditions and gives the harbor, in addition to its function as an arrival point, a connection to the region’s maritime culture.

A special way to explore the coastal area from the water is a seal-watching trip in the Malusi Archipelago. It lasts up to 2.5 hours and is intended for groups of four people. The observation takes place exclusively from the boat so that the animals are disturbed as little as possible. This clearly distinguishes the experience from a stay at the beach or a walk on Pedassaar: The focus is on observing seals on the water and at a distance from the animals’ habitat.

Cultural Highlights

The Salmistu summer concerts are also among the region’s cultural and traditional events. Together with the multifunctional harbor building, they create a local character in which the coast, fishing and seafaring traditions, and regional culture stand side by side. Depending on your interests, you can therefore view Salmistu as a starting point for beach days, a nature-focused exploration of the island, a boat trip to observe seals, or a stay with a cultural connection.
