Raasiku Parish: Nature, Culture and Trails
Raasiku Parish features a flat landscape typical of the North Estonian Plateau, with moraine plains, small drumlins and flat uplands. There are particularly many small drumlins along the Raasiku–Perila–Kiviloo line. This creates a clear nature theme for planning your trip: you can make landforms, bogs, protected areas and distinctive bodies of water the focus of your selection.
Bogs, protected areas and a historic park
Peningi raba is a bog composed exclusively of peat. Paraspõllu Nature Reserve provides a valuable habitat for orchids and is located within Raasiku Parish. Kiviloo hoiuala protected area is also located within Raasiku Parish. Peningi mõisapark is a protected historic park in Raasiku Parish. These nature themes offer different focal points: peat soil, plant habitat, protected areas and historic parkland.
Lõilasmäe järv is the only natural lake in Raasiku Parish. As a single body of water, it forms a distinct nature focus within the landscape. Peningi raba, by contrast, represents a bog area composed entirely of peat, while Peningi mõisapark represents protected historic parkland.
Activity on Trails and Routes
For active days, the Aruküla terviserada provides a clear point of reference. Aruküla terviserada is a 2.2-kilometre illuminated health and activity trail with a long and a short loop; the shorter loop is 600 metres long. Alongside Aruküla terviserada runs a 3.9-kilometre cycling cross-country track for cycling enthusiasts. A public, timed morning run takes place on Aruküla terviserada at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
Raasiku pumptrack is an outdoor BMX racing track for BMX racing, BMX freestyle and skateboarding. This places dedicated options for cycling and board sports alongside the more leisurely circular trail. Harju-Jaani Church was first mentioned in written records in 1322. Construction of the present Harju-Jaani Church began in 1860, and it was consecrated on 13 October 1863. Active pursuits and historic architecture therefore represent two clearly different travel interests.
Culture, Events and Garden Art
Raasiku Rahvamaja has been continuously active in a versatile range of ways since 1964. It offers activities for people from infancy to senior age and hosts several folk culture events throughout the year. Aruküla Kultuuriselts shapes the cultural life of the Aruküla region and offers concerts, theatre and performances. Dendropark Smaragd is a two-hectare ornamental garden and arboretum laid out in the English style; its creation began in 1985.
When choosing your hotel, you can consciously decide what to make the focus of your days: the flat landscape with drumlins and bogs, protected areas and the only natural lake, activity trails and BMX tracks, or churches, folk culture, concerts and garden art. Raasiku Parish offers an unusually diverse selection of specific nature, activity and cultural themes for this purpose.
