Rae combines protected nature, local history and opportunities for active days. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip: bog landscapes and parks, historic sites, or trails and cycling routes. The different places and their distinctive features offer a variety of ways to explore these themes.

Nature among bogs, parks and oak groves

Paraspõllu Nature Reserve covers 476 hectares; fen is the predominant habitat type there. The reserve lies on the border between the municipalities of Rae and Raasiku. This means that this natural area cannot be defined solely by a municipal boundary.

Other protected natural sites differ in size and character. Kurna Manor Park is a protected park in the village of Kurna and covers 10.9 hectares. The also-protected Lehmja Oak Grove is a 12-hectare woodland in Jüri. The areas are similar in size, but the park and woodland have different characteristics. Vaskjala Oak offers another kind of point of interest: it is designated as a protected individual natural monument.

In Lagedi, Külma Talu Park lies at the confluence of the Pirita and Leivajõgi rivers. Its origins are also part of local history: the artist Ott Kangilaski laid it out on the former estate of Voldemar Päts, the younger brother of Konstantin Päts. Here, the natural setting and historical connection can be considered together.

Local history and culture in Jüri and Lagedi

Jüri Church brings together several architectural and historical features. It stands on a medieval foundation and is pseudogothic. Unique stone crosses can be found in the churchyard. Another testament to local history is a monument erected in 1978, commemorating the site where Estonia’s first known iron-smelting furnace was found.

The Museum of the Estonian Struggle for Liberty in Lagedi provides an overview of 20th-century military history. Its timeline spans the land and naval battles of the Estonian War of Independence through to the Cold War. The museum also offers a T-34/85 tank driving experience with a professional team. If you want to include this activity in your plans, confirm its availability before your trip.

Trails and active pursuits

In Lagedi, a lit pedestrian and cycling route connects the centre with the railway stops. The route includes a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Pirita River. This is a useful point of reference when planning your trip if you are interested in getting around on foot or by bike.

There are also a variety of activities and trail options in other locations. Vaida’s recreation and centre area has a low ropes course and a village swing. The 6.6-kilometre Suuresta hiking trail starts near the destination, by the Suuresta Golf clubhouse, and runs in the area around Mädajärv.

Rae Municipality’s information page on hiking, health and ski trails provides information about the routes. This includes updates on ski trail conditions and snow depth on the Jüri health trails. Check these details when planning a specific outing. Visitor information for Lilleoru lists bus 105 from Tallinn. Alternatively, buses 130 and 138 go to the Ellaku stop; from there, it is about a 20-minute walk. Check the timetable before travelling.

Places to consider when planning your trip

The destination also includes the places Aruvalla and Peetri. Aruvalla is home to Elulille Garden, a permaculture garden designed in the pattern of the flower of life. Rare plants can be seen there. Together with the protected natural areas, the history of Jüri and Lagedi, and the range of trail options, these places offer several themes to help guide your search for accommodation in Rae.
