Stenstrup between Nature Trails, Landscapes and Brickmaking History

If you are looking for a place with a distinctive connection between landscape and cultural history, Stenstrup offers several different points of interest. The Stenstrup–Rødme nature trail leads from Rødme to Stenstrup. At Bakkelundgård, immediately east of Rødme Svinehaver, a nature trail has also been created through the hilly landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore explore Stenstrup particularly through walking experiences in nature, geological features and the history of the local brickworks. Traces of the Brickworks in and around Stenstrup

The brickmaking area in and around Stenstrup comprised up to seven brickworks. Its cultural environment emerged in the mid-19th century and shapes the historical story of the town. The building known as “Det lange hus” is also called “Brødløs” and is an example of workers’ housing in Stenstrup’s brickmaking area. The villas built for the brickworks directors provide a different architectural accent; they were constructed in the Historicist and National Romantic villa styles.

Individual landmarks also point to this past. At Stenstrup Syd Station, you can see the ruins of one of the original brickworks. The chimney at Stenstrup Maskinstation probably remains from an earlier brickworks and is a prominent landmark in the surrounding area. Because of its distinctive clay composition, Stenstrup Ice Lake has been used by brickworks from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Stenstrup Ice Lake and the Landscape Southeast of the Town

Stenstrup Ice Lake is considered Denmark’s second-largest ice-dammed lake. Its formation is associated with large quantities of meltwater accumulating in the lowlands around Stenstrup. Southeast of Stenstrup, the old clay pits reveal a distinctly extensive landscape character, with local grazing areas and a high proportion of wooded vegetation. Those who want to place greater emphasis on nature and landscape when choosing their destination will therefore find a second focal point here alongside the historic brickmaking area.

The Church and Historic Places

Stenstrup Church is also part of Stenstrup’s cultural history. It was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The nave is Romanesque and built of fieldstone and dressed stone; the oldest bell dates from 1503. Løjtved in the surrounding area also points to a long history: the place was first mentioned in 1372. The present two-storey main building dates from 1842 and was built on the wall remains of a medieval, solidly masonry-built structure.
