Refsvindinge between Church History, Landscape and Brewing Culture

Several historical features come together at Refsvindinge Church. The church was built in the Romanesque style between 1150 and 1200 and extensively altered in the late Middle Ages. The nave and the western part of the chancel originate from the original medieval church. Inside, there is also a Romanesque granite baptismal font, whose base is decorated with corner heads and crosses.

The local history also reaches far back: Refsvindinge was first mentioned in writing in 1435, when a farm in the village was transferred to the knight Sten Basse. It is believed that Refsvindinge was established around the year 1000. The 1773 village law was the first printed village law on Funen. The former railway station building still stands today as a reminder of the town’s time as a railway town.

Landscape between Valley, Forest and Watermill

Refsvindinge is located near the hilly Ørbæk Ådal and Æble Skov. The surrounding area has good trails for hiking and cycling. This makes the landscape a useful counterpoint to the town’s historical themes when planning a trip, if you enjoy dividing your days between culture and activity.

Lillemølle is located nearby on the Ørbæk Å. A narrow, winding road from Refsvindinge towards Sulkendrup passes the thatched watermill. The surroundings include a millpond and partly wooded slopes. Just over 10 hectares around Lillemølle were placed under protection in 1964. From its construction in the early 17th century until 1899, the mill was a leased mill under the Holckenhavn estate.

Brewing Traditions and Community Events

Refsvindinge Brewery was founded by Hans Poul Rasmussen on 15 April 1885. Today, it offers a wide selection of beers, including light and dark ales, pilsner, wheat beer, bock, Guldøl, porter, stout and Hvidtøl. The brewery frequently hosts tours. Companies, associations or private individuals visit, taste beer and learn about the history of the brewery.

A maypole is put up in Refsvindinge every year and later taken down again. Both occasions are accompanied by a communal meal.
