Store Fuglede: Nature, Trails and History

Tissø, Fugledegaard, Store Fuglede Church and trails through the landscape each offer a different focus. The area therefore cannot be reduced to just one type of excursion: around the lake, the diverse wildlife takes center stage; along the trails, physical activity; and in the exhibition and church, history.

Tissø and the lakeside landscape

Tissø is Denmark’s fourth-largest lake and is home to a diverse bird and animal population. For you, this means a clear focus on nature if observation and experiencing the landscape are more important than a packed sightseeing program. Bjerge Nordstrand beach is also located in the vicinity of Store Fuglede. The coastal connection remains limited to the immediate surroundings of Store Fuglede.

Cycling route and historic trail connection near Store Fuglede

The approximately 390 km-long Ice Age Route runs between Jyderup and Kalundborg through moraine landscapes, past lakes and through river valleys. The approximate length of the Ice Age Route is relevant when planning the timing of a cycling trip. It runs close to Fugledegaard, thereby bringing an extensive cycling route into the thematic landscape of Store Fuglede. Værslevstien was established on the former railway grounds as a trail connection for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Its route passes the former railway station of Store Fuglede. Thus, a long cycling route and a trail connection for several modes of transport meet different impressions of the landscape and history.

Fugledegaard: Shelters and the Tissø Ring

Fugledegaard offers several specific points of interest for travel planning. There are five spacious shelters there, each providing room for approximately 6 to 7 people. The Fugledegaard exhibition features a reconstruction of the Tissø Ring. Made of pure gold, the ring was found in the area in 1977, weighs approximately 2 kg and is considered the largest single gold find from the Viking Age in Danish history. The exhibition is free of charge; its opening hours follow those of Fugledegaard.

Store Fuglede Church: Architectural and Art History

The elevated Store Fuglede Church focuses attention on architectural and art history. It features a crucifixion group from the early 16th century showing Christ on the cross with Mary and John on either side. The church building consists of a Romanesque nave and several later additions. The Romanesque nave and later additions stand side by side as distinct construction phases. In the Middle Ages, Store Fuglede Church was converted into a hall church. Architecture, sculpture and historical change come together here in one specific building.
