The landscape is shaped by raised bogs, lakes and protected areas, as well as trails and individual cultural and historical landmarks. Lakes and protected nature
“Jeziora Szczecineckie” is a protected landscape area within the Gmina Szczecinek. Bagno Kusowo is a particularly distinctive natural area: the raised bog covers around 300 ha and is considered one of the largest and best-preserved Baltic raised bogs in Poland. Its size makes it a destination in its own right for anyone interested in peatland landscapes. The “Jezioro Kiełpino” water and flora protection area covers 49.4 ha and protects relict aquatic plants. The two areas therefore represent different nature themes: the raised bog on the one hand, and the protection of rare aquatic plants on the other.
Lake Wielimie is also part of the Gmina’s landscape: it covers 17.9 km² and lies partly within its boundaries. Fishing for recreational purposes at Lake Wierzchowo is subject to a specific regulation. Since 24 February 2026, it has been governed by a new order issued by the head of the municipality and is permitted only from the shore. If fishing is part of your trip, take this restriction into account when planning.
Trails for hiking and cycling
The “Wielkie Błoto” nature and forest educational trail lies on the southern shore of Lake Wierzchowo, southeast of Wierzchowo. Its stops and structures include five information boards, a wooden footbridge across the bog and an observation tower. The trail offers several ways to explore the natural and forest landscape. These features also give you a clear idea of what to look out for along the route.
For a longer hike, the red-marked “Szlak Wzniesień Moreny Czołowej” passes through the Gmina Szczecinek. The trail is 161 km long; bear this distance in mind when planning a hiking trip. Cyclists have a separate option in the red-marked “Szczecineckie Jeziora” cycle route, which is 65.1 km long. It passes through the villages of Spore, Stare Wierzchowo, Wierzchowo, Trzebiechowo, Kusowo and Dalęcino in the Gmina Szczecinek. The two routes differ in activity and length, and can be considered accordingly as hiking or cycling options.
Churches, a palace and a mural
Several buildings offer a glimpse into local history. In Trzebiechowo, the palace complex includes buildings dating from the second half of the 19th century. The village is also home to a church dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. In Wierzchowo, the Church of the Assumption of Mary is an 18th-century building. The Church of the Holy Family in Spore was built between 1859 and 1865; the All Saints’ Church in Wilcze Laski dates from 1894. These different dates show that the churches cannot all be attributed to a single period of construction.
Another historical landmark is the “Przewodzi Partia” mural in Wierzchowo. It was created in 1975 and is still visible. Anyone interested in the history of public art can consider this work alongside the older churches and palace complex as a distinct aspect of cultural history.
