Lake Scenery and Water Activities
Pyrzycki County includes the area around Lake Miedwie, the Płonia and Płoń rivers, Lake Płoń, and the Barlinek Lake District between Tetyń and Jesionowo. At 36.8 km², Lake Miedwie is Poland’s fifth-largest lake. In places, its shores have a shallow-water zone several dozen metres wide; prevailing winds create favourable conditions for windsurfing. Its size, shallow shoreline areas and wind conditions give Lake Miedwie a different character from the smaller, more intricately shaped bodies of water near Lipiany.
The lake complex near Lipiany includes the ribbon lakes Chłop, Będzin and Wądół. Its highly indented shoreline, with numerous peninsulas and islands, features narrow passages, shallow areas and shoals. At the same time, the lakes are relatively deep and have clear water; they are popular with anglers. Those who like to distinguish landscapes by their shoreline features will find a different character here than at Lake Miedwie.
Garden Culture in Przelewice
The Ogrody Przelewice cover more than 30 hectares and are home to a collection of exceptional trees and shrubs from various parts of the world. The Botanical Garden in Przelewice includes a Japanese garden, a collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, the Valley of Five Springs and the Rose Avenue. The different garden areas each have their own character: the collection of woody plants sits alongside specially designed spaces and an avenue.
The Ogrody Przelewice also host Noc Bajek, where actors perform fairy tales from around the world live on several stages. Dates vary by edition; check before your trip whether an event falls within your travel dates. The Botanical Garden’s opening hours also vary by season: from 1 April to 21 September, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; from 22 September to 31 October, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and from 1 November to 31 March, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In winter, the garden is closed on Mondays. Check the hours again before your visit.
Sacred Architecture and Prehistory
In Brzesko, the parish church is a Marian shrine. It was built from granite blocks in the 13th century. The altar and pulpit date from the early 17th century. Another distinctive feature is the carved, polychrome-painted ceiling: cone-shaped corbels hang down from the centre of the vault. The building’s construction date, furnishings and ceiling decorations give the church interior several clearly distinct historical layers.
Regional history also reaches far back in Karsko, in the municipality of Przelewice. There is a megalithic burial ground with two similar Kujavian-type megalithic tombs, known as “Zelki” or “Giant Tombs.” They were built in the later stages of the Neolithic, around 3000 to 2200 BC. The burial site therefore dates from considerably earlier than the medieval and early modern architectural evidence in Brzesko.
