Zastań: Water, Nature and Traces of Oil History

Water landscape as a defining feature of the area

Zastań has a distinct local character shaped by water, protected nature and prominent traces of human use. The Dziwna River lies to the east of the planning area; wetlands and reed beds border it. If you see the landscape not merely as a backdrop but as an important travel theme, the focus here is on waterways, riverside areas and their integration into larger protected areas.

The bodies of water themselves also have different characteristics. In the lower section of the Lewieńska Struga, the watercourse between Lake Kołczewo and the Kamieński Lagoon has been regulated and deepened.

The landscape of the Wolin municipality

At municipal level, the waters of the Szczecin Lagoon, the Dziwna River, Lake Koprowo, the Wolińskie Lakeland, the lakes Ostrowo and Piaski, as well as the waters of the Baltic Sea, are counted among the tourist resources. These are complemented by forest complexes, including the forests of Woliński National Park, a varied landscape and existing tourist trails.

For travel planning, this diversity opens up several perspectives: you can include water-shaped landscapes, forests and rural areas among your interests, as well as orient yourself around existing road, rail and water connections. Bodies of water account for 21 % of the municipality's area and thus clearly shape the regional perspective.

Natural environment and protected features

The planning area in Zastań lies within the Natura 2000 sites Zalew Kamieński i Dziwna (PLB320011) and Ujście Odry i Zalew Szczeciński (PLH320018). Those who pay attention to natural features and protected areas when choosing a destination will therefore find a clearly identifiable landscape context in Zastań.

A distinctive natural feature in the village is the pedunculate oak “Zastańczyk”. It is protected as a natural monument because of its natural-scientific, scientific and landscape values. Its trunk circumference is 522 cm, measured at a height of 1.3 m.

Archaeology and oil history

Zastań is home to the registered archaeological site Zastań, site 2, in AZP area 18-07/6. It adds an archaeological dimension to the natural environment and gives the village another specific point of reference for visitors interested in cultural history.

The regional history also includes the Ośrodek Produkcyjny Zastań oil production centre of the Kamień Pomorski oil field. It is located on Wolin Island north of Zastań, in the direction of the Kamieński Lagoon. Access to the Ośrodek Produkcyjny Zastań is permitted only with prior authorisation from PGNiG.

The oil deposits in the vicinity of Kamień Pomorski were discovered in 1972 in the formations of the Hauptdolomit. This historical connection shows that, alongside nature and water, the landscape around Zastań has also been shaped by the use of geological resources.

Activities in the village

For active days, Zastań was equipped with an outdoor fitness area in 2025. It includes a horizontal and a vertical ladder, a bench, a pull-up bar with handles and gymnastic rings. An information board with rules of use was also installed there. This means that, alongside nature, water and history, physical activity is also embedded in the character of the village.
