Olszewo Węgorzewskie was founded in 1562 by Maciej Olszewski. A defining historic building is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: it was built in 1903–1904, originally served a Lutheran congregation, and became a Catholic church in 1946. The church features Neo-Gothic furnishings and a tall corner tower.

Historical Traces

The village's history also includes its former railway connection. Olszewo Węgorzewskie had a railway station on the Gołdap–Węgorzewo line; the line opened in 1914 and was closed and dismantled in 1945.

The former Protestant cemetery in Olszewo Węgorzewskie is recorded as the burial site of three unidentified Russian soldiers.
