Kozłowo: Estate History and Nature

Kozłowo combines agritourism with protected landscapes and the history of a former estate. Agritourism has developed in the area; Kozłowo is known for its landscape, recreational appeal and agricultural character. If you take nature and local history into account when choosing a destination, you can connect both interests to specific features: protected areas of different geographic extents and the surviving estate park, along with the area's historic landmarks.

Natural Environment and Birdlife

Kozłowo lies within the Puszcza Piska Natura 2000 site. Part of the area is also within the Ostoja Piska Natura 2000 habitat protection site; likewise, only part belongs to the Rzeka Babant i Jezioro Białe landscape and nature complex. The geographic extent therefore varies: Puszcza Piska includes Kozłowo, while the other two designations each cover parts of the area.

An ecological assessment carried out in 2011 recorded a total of 84 bird species in an area of 690 hectares around Kozłowo, including 14 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive: lesser spotted eagle, western marsh harrier, black kite, red kite, European honey buzzard, montagu's harrier, white-tailed eagle, white stork, black stork, common crane, black woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker, red-backed shrike and woodlark. The date makes this bird survey a distinct aspect of the area's natural profile, alongside its protected areas.

Estate Park and Local History

A protected former estate park dating from the 18th or 19th century survives in Kozłowo. The park is listed in the regional register of immovable monuments under registration number A-1490; the entry is dated 26 October 1983. The two dates refer to different things: the century indicates when the park dates from, while 1983 is the date of its registration.

The settlement also developed in a form typical of an estate village. Kozłowo was established in the so-called Wildenow area when Grand Master Konrad Zöllner von Rothenstein granted Philipp Wildenaw 350 włóks under Kulm law in 1388. In 1483, the Kozłowo estate was divided between Maciej Wyselin and Piotr Wildenaw, resulting in the estates of Kozłowo and Rybno. The dates mark different stages: the context in which the area was settled and the later division of the estate.

The area's earlier history also includes a one-class school founded under noble patronage before 1740. The former estate's palace was partially damaged by a fire in 2007. Together with the surviving estate park, these details offer different historical perspectives, from settlement patterns and education to the development of the former estate.

Dated Events

Specific event themes include lumberjack competitions, as well as bread, honey and milk. The first national lumberjack competition in Kozłowo took place on 16 and 17 May 2025; the Polish Lumberjack Championships were scheduled for 19 and 20 September 2026. At the Święto Chleba, Miodu i Mleka in Kozłowo on 23 May 2026, a bread-baking demonstration, beekeeping workshops and tastings of dishes made with milk and honey were planned. The dates specify the timing of the different event listings.
