Karwie by the Lake: Village History and Forests

Karwie can be understood through its location on Lake Karwie and the forests on its western side. In the 19th century, the settlement developed as a street village; its northern end reached the lake. The landscape and settlement pattern give a concrete impression of the place and provide a starting point for considering Karwie as a travel destination.

Location and Development

Karwie lies four kilometres southwest of Mrągowo. A regional road leads to Grabowo and Rybno, and onward to Szczytno. Lake Karwie is also a useful point of reference: the northern end of the street village, which emerged in the 19th century, reached the lake. Forests and the lake surround the village on its western side. Thus, Karwie combines a clearly identifiable street layout with a landscape of forests and a lake.

A Look at History

One early event with a precise date took place on 25 September 1555. Georg von Diebes, starost of Ryn and Szestno, sold four sołectwo hides in the place then called Karffen for 198 marks to Matz von Mertinsdorf, that is, Maciej from Marcinkowo. The transaction was subject to the requirement that the village be settled across 40 hides (668 ha). The four hides in the sale and the 40 hides in the settlement requirement refer to different areas: the first figure concerns the subject of the purchase, and the second the requirement for the village.

Karwie’s history is also reflected in individual historic sites and buildings. The Protestant cemetery dates from the mid-19th century. It is one of the cemeteries in Mrągowo Municipality under the care of the Voivodeship Heritage Conservator. This places the cemetery in both a specific historical period and the context of heritage conservation in the municipality.

Historic Buildings and Local Enterprise

Several brick residential buildings can also be distinguished by their respective dates of construction. The building at Karwie 3 dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. Karwie 9 is a manor house from the 1920s; the brick residential building at Karwie 14 dates from the early 20th century. These details provide three distinct points of reference for the village’s architectural history without grouping the buildings into a single complex.

Olejarnia No.1 offers another perspective on the village’s present-day character. It cold-presses rapeseed oil and other vegetable oils in small batches. The business originated on a family farm in Mrągowo; its address is listed as Karwie 51, 11-700 Karwie. The production of cold-pressed rapeseed oil is a particularly concrete example. The business thus complements the village’s historic features with local production whose origins are connected to Mrągowo and whose address is in Karwie.
