Święta Lipka: Pilgrimage Sanctuary and Organ

Baroque complex and basilica

The sanctuary comprises the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cloisters surrounding it and the monastery. The complex is designated a Pomnik Historii (Historic Monument) and is considered the oldest Marian cult centre in northern Poland. On 24 February 1983, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of minor basilica by decree. These different designations reflect the historical and religious significance of the site, while the buildings together shape the sanctuary’s Baroque character.

The Rosary chapels also give visitors a distinct focus. The complex comprises 15 chapels along the pilgrimage route from Reszel to Święta Lipka. The niches contain reliefs depicting the mysteries of the Rosary. The chapels are built of brick and plastered; most have gabled roofs, while three have hip roofs. This makes it possible to appreciate the religious imagery and architectural details together, rather than seeing the route merely as a link between two places.

Pilgrimage route and its course

The final section of the pilgrimage route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest. This is a specific feature for anyone including the pilgrimage route in their trip: the final section does not follow a paved path but passes through the forest. The “Gwiaździsta” star pilgrimage leads to Święta Lipka from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko and nearby parishes. The sanctuary is therefore the destination of pilgrimages from several of the named towns and communities.

Museum and history of the sanctuary

The Świętolipskie Museum complements the religious and architectural perspective with exhibitions. It has seven exhibition rooms, six permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions. One exhibition is devoted to the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. The museum also displays part of Saint John Paul II’s personal library: around 1,000 books and albums that were brought from Rome to Święta Lipka after his death.

Organ performances and music evenings

In Święta Lipka, visitors can hear the Baroque organ and watch its moving elements every day. The sanctuary publishes set performance times. On Sundays and public holidays, performances are scheduled for 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00. On Saturdays, the times are 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:30; on weekdays, 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00. Some times differ for groups of more than 20 people, in some cases by prior arrangement.

The Świętolipskie Music Evenings have been held in the basilica on Fridays at 20:00 during the summer holidays since 1989. The organisers describe them as an annual musical event and announced preparations for the 39th edition in 2027. The music series therefore offers a distinct seasonal highlight alongside the daily organ performances; for travel planning, it is important to distinguish the stated times and the occasion.
