Castle, Bridges and City Wall

Reszel’s bishops’ castle was built between 1350 and 1401. Its tower offers a panorama of the Old Town. The building’s history and the view go hand in hand here, without reducing the castle to a single perspective. The Gothic bridges provide a different accent: one of the two crosses the Sajna in the northeastern part of the city. Its location by the river and within the city adds another historic building to the view of the castle.

Sections of the city wall have also been preserved, in the east and north. It was built between 1360 and 1370. The castle, bridges and wall thus point to different periods in the city’s history. Exploring Reszel through its buildings brings medieval landmarks into view alongside buildings from later centuries.

Church Towers and Religious Buildings

The tower of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul is over 50 meters high and can be climbed. Along the way, visitors can see the clock mechanism and the bells, which hang at a height of 32 meters. At the top, the panorama extends beyond the city into the surrounding area. The church tower therefore offers a different view from the tower of the bishops’ castle: here, the focus is on views across the city and its surroundings, while the castle tower offers a panorama of the Old Town.

The interior of St. Peter and Paul also has distinctive features. The church has three naves and furnishings dating from the mid-19th century. It also has an organ built by Jan Roth of Orneta in 1829. The tower, interior and organ each offer different points of interest for exploring the building.

Another church in the city is St. John the Baptist. The Late Baroque building was constructed in 1799–1800 in place of a Gothic church and is now a Greek Catholic church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is part of the former Jesuit college complex, which borders the north side of the castle and includes the church. The church’s history and the former use of the college complex are thus closely linked to the ensemble by the castle.

Historic Houses and City Park

Other historic buildings include Reszel’s granaries. They were built around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and feature half-timbered construction with plastered brick infill. The Old Rectory, the residence of the Warmian prebendaries, was probably built in 1444 and is the city’s oldest residential building.

For a break in the green, the city park offers walking paths, a pond and an amphitheater. At the park exit onto Ulica Podmiejska, there is also a playground and an outdoor fitness area. The park offers a choice of paths and a waterside spot, as well as dedicated areas for recreation.

The Municipal Cultural Center puts on an annual reenactment of the trial and execution of a woman. If this event is of interest when planning your trip, check the exact dates in advance.
