By the lake: promenade, beaches and water sports

The nearly 7 km-long promenade by Lake Ełk is a walking and cycling path; it can also be used for inline skating. This makes it suitable for different ways of getting around the lakeshore. Two bathing beaches are right on the promenade. If you would rather plan your time on the water, the centrally located lake offers opportunities for sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. The lakeside path, beaches and water sports offer different ways to shape your stay: you can consider the lake as a place for exercise, a day at the beach or activities on the water.

There are specific destinations for families too: the climbing park by the shore has three courses of varying difficulty, adapted to users' ages. At Kopernika Park, children and young people can learn about astronomy and physics through play. Its design is based on a planetary system. The educational park is on ul. Wojska Polskiego, near the mouth of the Ełk River. These two attractions offer different experiences—physical activity at the climbing park and natural science topics at Kopernika Park.

Choose routes by length and character

If you would like to include routes in your travel plans, the stated distances can serve as a guide. The blue “Morenowe Wzgórza” route is 30 km long. It leads from Ełk via Straduny, Piaski, Malinówka, Królowa Wola, Czerwonka, Grabnik and Chrzanowo, and back to Ełk. The Michał Kajka Route also starts in Ełk and runs 37 km to Skomack Wielki. The two routes differ in length and course; which one suits your plans depends on the route you would like to take.

The Tatar Route is 19 km long and starts in Ełk. It runs via Szyba, Tatarski Hill, Chochołki and Ostrykół to Prostki and Bogusze. Another option for cyclists is the 15 km MTB route in Ełk County. It runs in the area around Tatarski Hill and Tatar Lake, along the Ełk–Wiśniowo Ełckie route. The four routes differ in length and the intermediate places listed, and the MTB route is specifically designated for mountain biking. This means you can make your choice based on the stated distance and route.

Train journeys and traces of the city's history

The Ełk Narrow-Gauge Railway offers a different way to get around. It currently operates tourist passenger trains hauled by a diesel locomotive. The route runs Ełk–Sypitki–Ełk; trains run according to a timetable or by request. Alongside the routes, this offers a journey on a set course. When planning, it is worth noting that trains are available both according to a timetable and by request.

In the city centre, there is a group of 19th-century tenement houses with Art Nouveau and eclectic elements. The Papal Trail begins in Ełk at the place where Saint John Paul II celebrated the Eucharist on 8 June 1999. Its individual stages can be travelled year-round on foot or by bicycle, and on skis in winter. These attractions offer different perspectives on Lyck: historic architecture in the centre and a route whose starting point is associated with a specific event from 1999.
