Bartoszyce is a county town in the Warmian–Masurian Voivodeship. The town lies in the valley of the Łyna River and in the historic region of Barcja.

Culture and history

In the wider regional surroundings of Bartoszyce are Lidzbark Warmiński – Zamek Biskupów Warmińskich XIVw. and Lidzbark Warmiński: St. Peter & Paul.

Bartoszyce’s historic architecture includes the Gothic Lidzbark Gate. It was built in 1468 and is considered the only surviving relic of the town walls. The parish church of “St John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Częstochowa” was built in the Gothic style in the mid-14th century and later extended.

Landscape and bodies of water

Bartoszyce lies in the Sępopolska Lowland in the lower Łyna Valley. The surrounding area features a rolling landscape and numerous small bodies of water. Gora Khlebnaya is located in the surrounding area; Gora Sadovaya, Gora Zamok, and Gora Glinyanaya are located in the wider regional surroundings.

Local bodies of water include the Mleczarskie city lake, which was created by damming the Suszyca and has an open bathing area. Jeziorko Bartbetowskie is another local body of water.

Geographical location

Bartoszyce lies on National Road 51 toward the border crossing near Bezledy. According to reports, passenger rail services have been suspended; freight trains continue to operate toward Głomno.
