Halle- and Hunneberg are accessible from Vargön. If you make nature and geological history the focus of your trip, you will find several themes there: different types of rock, traces of historical quarrying, a path to Ättestupa, and outdoor activities. Further afield, an extensive wetland and a waterfall add to the options. This gives you a choice of landscapes, history, and guided experiences when deciding where to stay and how to plan your days.

Nature and geological history at Halle- and Hunneberg

The mountains Halle and Hunneberg consist of sandstone, alum shale, and diabase. Their geological history is presented through the fossil Grapto at the visitor center and museum. There are cavities in several places on both mountains. These are traces of old limestone caves from the 18th century, where limestone and shale were mined. This offers two different ways to explore the history of the landscape: the museum focuses on geological history, while the cavities tell the story of the former extraction of limestone and shale. A path leads from Halleberg's ancient hillfort to the dramatic Ättestupa. This route is another point of interest for travelers interested in historical places as well as geological history.

Wetlands and a waterfall further afield

Further afield from Vargön are two distinct natural attractions: Öjemossarna, a 400-hectare wetland with several hundred forested islands, and Skäktefallet, the 36-meter-high waterfall at the foot of Halleberg, also known as Brudslöjan. Öjemossarna represents the wetland landscape with its forested islands, while Skäktefallet is a waterfall defined by its height and location. This lets you choose between different landscape themes when planning your trip.

Cycling trails, guided experiences, and water activities

There are three cycling trails in the Halle- and Hunneberg Ecopark, maintained by OK Skogsvargarna and the Hunneberg Sports and Fitness Club. A guided hike is offered on Hunneberg, where you can learn about wildlife and nature. Guided forest bathing is also available in the forest. The hike combines exercise with learning about nature, while forest bathing focuses on guided time in the forest. Guided fishing with equipment provided is offered at Hallsjön on Halleberg; there is also put-and-take fishing there, with rainbow trout stocked regularly. You can canoe on Eldmörjan; the lake is just a short walk from the visitor center. The options therefore range from cycling trails and guided nature experiences to fishing and canoeing.
