Vänersborg has a strong connection to Lake Vänern: its lakeshore stretches for ten Swedish miles, or about 100 kilometers. When planning your trip, the question is not only where to go by the water, but also what kind of experience you want to shape your day. Nature trails, art and urban attractions offer different highlights and give you concrete points to consider when choosing where to stay.

Nature trails and varied lakeside views

In the Dalbobergen Nature Reserve, easy-to-walk trails lead to lovely views across Vänersborgsviken Bay. This is a good option if you are looking for trails with views across the bay. Nygårdsängen offers something different: trails pass through reeds and meadows and along the water, and the birdlife is abundant. The loop trail in the nature reserve is about 1.2 kilometers long. You can choose between views across the bay and a walk that takes you through different natural areas and along the water. The specific distance at Nygårdsängen also gives you a useful measure when planning your day.

Hiking and cycling routes with clear connections

The two Pilgrimsleden trails follow different routes. Pilgrimsleden Göta Älv runs from Trollhättan along the Göta Älv, passing the Överby shopping center and the excavated Karls grav canal. After the lock, it continues along the north bank of the canal to the center of Vänersborg. Check trail conditions before setting out. Beyond Vänersborg, Pilgrimsleden Dalsland continues: a total of 100 kilometers along Lake Vänern towards Sikhall, then inland via Mellerud and Håverud to Edsleskog. While the Göta Älv route leads to the center, the Dalsland route starts by Lake Vänern and then heads inland.

You can start the Vänerstad hike anywhere in central Vänersborg. The travel center or the tourist office in Vänersborg are recommended starting points. The Vänerleden cycling route also has a clear connection to the city: Vänersborg is a stop, and the Vänersborg–Åmål and Vänersborg–Mariestad stages start or end there. This gives you several options for planning your day: a flexible starting point in the center, a route leading to the center, or a cycling stage with Vänersborg as its starting or ending point.

Art and culture in different forms

Vänersborgs museum is Sweden’s oldest museum environment. Vänersborgs konsthall offers guided tours of Vänersborg’s public art for large and small groups of all ages. ARTSCAPE Vänersborg created nine large-scale works of art on selected building facades in the city. Skulpturparken Restad Gård displays works by internationally acclaimed artists. Together, these offerings provide different ways for culture enthusiasts to engage, from guided tours and art on building facades to sculptures in the park.

For an event, the renovated Gröna salen at Vänersborgs bibliotek is another option. The hall can be rented and has room for 105 people seated or a maximum of 150 people at a time. If you are planning to use it, check the rental terms in advance, as rental arrangements may change.

Water activities and practical information

Vattenpalatset is an aquatic center for all ages, with water slides, a water gun, a current channel and a cave. Its location in relation to the train station is another useful point for planning your route: Vattenpalatset is a two-minute walk from Vänersborg station. This gives the activity a clear connection to your arrival point, without assuming a particular length of stay.

Skräckleparken has several swimming spots right on Lake Vänern. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course there. The two offerings provide different ways to enjoy the same place: you can consider the park for time by the water or a round of disc golf. Together with the aquatic center, they offer a clear choice among the swimming and active options described. When deciding where to stay, you can combine these activities with the nature trails, routes and cultural attractions that best suit your travel plans.
