Discover Öxabäck: lake, trails and local history
Accommodation in Öxabäck
Discover Öxabäck through a range of interests: Lake Öxasjön lies right next to the village, running and fitness trails range from short to longer distances, and several historic sites bring local history to life. This makes both exercise and scenery, as well as church architecture, everyday history and women’s football, interesting starting points when choosing where to stay.
Lake Öxasjön and trails around the village
Lake Öxasjön is right next to Öxabäck. The lake has a sandy beach and grassy areas. A lit loop by the lake is 1.6 kilometres long. The fitness and running trails by the lake range from 1.6 to 13 kilometres and pass through nature alongside the deep blue water. You can therefore choose from a variety of trail lengths right by the village; lighting is another specific feature of the 1.6-kilometre loop.
Five fitness and running trails start at Hagavallen and are maintained by Öxabäcks VIK. At Brokvarn, a nature trail offers another way to explore on foot; the walk is said to take about 30 minutes. For a specific plan, you can choose between a loop by the lake, the trails starting at Hagavallen, and the trail at Brokvarn, whose estimated walking time is given.
The Torestorpsturerna also offer their own distinctive scenery. The route passes between Torestorp, Älekulla and Öxabäck through an old agricultural landscape, deep forests and scenic areas. It follows small gravel and paved roads with almost no traffic. The Öxabäck Torestorpsvägen stop is served by Västtrafik route 371. The published timetable is valid from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026; check the timetable for journey times when planning your trip.
Churches, historic buildings and local traditions
Öxabäck Church was built in 1874–1875 on the site of an older church. Its unusual architecture includes a stair tower reminiscent of Danish churches. This makes the church a striking example of local architectural history. Another historic site is Långås: the old croft dates from the 19th century and illustrates how people lived in the past. The Öxabäcks hembygdsförening holds events there every year, including a Christmas celebration and a Slåttergille haymaking feast.
Sockenstugan also tells a story of older architecture: the building dates from the late 17th century and houses a small museum. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check current visitor arrangements in advance. In Brokvarn, the Öxabäcks hembygdsförening owns a water-powered mill and a sawmill. Nearby is also the stone-block bridge Ridspången, which dates from a medieval bridle path between Denmark and Stockholm.
Another annual tradition is Glöggatrövet in the forest around Stockasjöarna. It includes a quiz walk, stops serving warm glögg and other activities. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance.
The history of women’s football
Öxabäck is also connected with the history of women’s football: the women’s team was founded in the village in 1966 and was among the first teams of its kind in Sweden. On the ground floor of “Antikhuset,” a museum features an extensive exhibition about the local team from 1966 to 1999. Numerous newspaper clippings and photographs offer insight into its history.
Alongside churches, historic buildings and trails, this makes sport history another distinct theme. If you want to include the exhibition in your plans, check current visitor arrangements in advance.
