Överlida: Lakes, cycling routes and local history
Accommodation in Överlida
Överlida offers ways to spend your days by the water, on a bike, or exploring local history. Lakes, swimming spots and various cycling options sit alongside church art and industrial history. This makes it possible to plan a trip around different interests without reducing the town to a single theme.
Lakes, swimming spots and fishing
Överlida FVO includes Stora Hallången, Lilla Hallången, Mjöasjön, Bredasjön and Stora Djupasjön. The same FVO also includes the two swimming spots Näset and Vita Sand. This means that five lakes and two named swimming spots are part of the area’s waterside offerings.
Näset on Stora Hallången in Överlida is a sandy beach surrounded by forest. It has a bathing jetty, a diving tower, benches and a barbecue area. Vita Sand is easier to reach by boat. The swimming spots therefore offer different experiences: Näset has a forest-fringed beach and facilities, while Vita Sand is more easily reached by boat.
Fishing is another waterside activity. In Överlida FVO, you can catch species including perch, pike, Blåsik and eel. Those planning to spend time by the water can choose between swimming at two named spots and fishing in the FVO.
Cycling between a former railway line and mountain bike trails
Pyttebanan was once a railway line between Limmared and Falkenberg and is now being restored as a cycle route. Some sections can be cycled; large parts of Pyttebanan are car-free. The route thus brings together its railway history and its present-day use as a cycle path, with cycling access explicitly applying to certain sections.
The section of Pyttebanan between Överlida and Holsljunga is 8 kilometres long and passes the excursion destination Gräne Gruva. This distance refers to the section between the two towns. For orientation, that gives you both a specific route length and a named destination along the way.
Överlida has a downhill trail and a skills trail for mountain bikes. Both are maintained by volunteers and can be used free of charge. These two trails offer a different cycling option from the historic Pyttebanan: they are specifically intended for mountain biking.
Näsetrundan has been extended by 800 metres and fitted with lighting. Alongside the details about Pyttebanan and the mountain bike trails, this provides another specific piece of information about a route in the area.
Buildings, art and local history
Överlida Hembygdsmuseum at Halla explores the area’s industrial development through ÖIK’s 100-year history. The museum is housed in an old weaving mill dating from the early 20th century and is run by Överlida Hembygdsförening. The focus on industrial history and the building’s former use as a weaving mill provide a tangible historical context for a museum visit.
Kullaberg first opened its doors on Boxing Day 1937 and served as a meeting place for textile workers’ leisure activities. These included masquerade balls, dances and occasional film screenings. The history of the venue is therefore also connected to the leisure and community life of textile workers.
Överlida kyrka was built in 1962–63. Its architect, Nils Halla, was from the local area. The altarpiece in the chancel was added later: Eva Spångberg carved it in 1993. The construction period and the artwork thus connect two points in time and offer visitors interested in architecture a tangible way to explore the church.
