In Örsås, the Ätran and Assman rivers meet at a place known locally as “åmotet.” The village combines this connection to the rivers with a small lake, a prehistoric cultural landscape and distinctive natural environments. When choosing the focus of your trip, it’s worth considering water, nature and local history as different aspects of your stay.

Rivers, a Lake and Natural Environments

The confluence of the Ätran and Assman rivers is in Örsås and is known locally as “åmotet.” Örsåssjön provides another landmark: the small lake lies within the village. In addition to common fish species, trout are also found in the waters around Örsås. The rivers, lake and fish populations give the area’s waters several distinct facets as a landscape feature.

Bjällermossen Nature Reserve lies southeast of Örsås church village and is part of the Hästömossen peatland complex. It comprises a mosaic of peat bogs, swamp forests and mixed forests rich in conifers. Notable features include cloudberry blossoms, black grouse and old, slow-growing pines. Bjällermossen is not currently signposted, so if you’re planning a visit, it’s a good idea to check your route in advance.

Holmaberg offers a different natural highlight. Its hyperite rock differs from the surrounding gneiss, and its vegetation is considerably more diverse than that of the surrounding landscape. Lime trees, oaks and hazel grow on the western slope. Visitors are welcome at Holmaberg Nature Reserve. The two areas can therefore be distinguished by different features: Bjällermossen is characterised by its mosaic of peatland and forest, while Holmaberg stands out for its geological contrast and more diverse slope vegetation.

Röstorp and the History of the Village

The Örsås Kulturstig/Röstorpsleden cultural trail is two kilometres long and passes through the central part of a 150-hectare prehistoric field-clearing area. The area in Röstorp is considered one of the largest and best-preserved ancient farming areas in Sweden. Two kilometres is the length of the trail, while 150 hectares is the area of the prehistoric site: together, these figures provide a sense of the route and the larger landscape it passes through.

The church is also part of the village’s long history: Örsås has had a church since the 15th century. A new grey-stone church was built in 1958. In Örsås Church, an altarpiece depicting the Sermon on the Mount is flanked by two painted church windows showing figures from the Bible. Örsås Hembygdsgård is situated between the church and Örsåssjön. Stommen’s old buildings of cultural and historical interest also include a low dwelling house dating from the early 18th century.

Traditions and a Stay by the Water

Coffee Sundays at Örsås Hembygdsgård are an annual tradition held in July. The Midsummer celebration in Örsås has been held since 1956, with games, singing and music. A recurring July event and a festival with a long history thus represent different aspects of local life. If you’re planning a trip around a particular celebration, it’s a good idea to check the current event dates.

Örsås bathing area has a bathing jetty, a toilet and basic changing facilities. For those who want to plan part of their stay around activities by the water, it is a distinct landmark in the village.

Beyond the village itself, Örsås parish offers a broader landscape setting: the river valleys are dominated by farmland, while the areas beyond them are characterised by peatlands and forest. This distinction adds a wider perspective on the local landscape to the picture of individual natural areas.
