Köpmannebro on the Dalsland Canal
Accommodation in Köpmannebro
Köpmannebro is closely linked to the Dalsland Canal: the navigable waterway runs for 253 kilometers from Köpmannebro to Östervallskog. This makes locks, waterways and cultural history a clear focus for planning your trip. You can also combine nature and cultural experiences: bridges and older buildings shape the area, while hiking trails lead to a nearby nature reserve. First consider whether the canal route, local history or nature experiences should set the tone for your stay.
The Dalsland Canal and its locks
The Köpmannebro lock station has one lock chamber. It is the first lock on the Dalsland Canal and also its largest. From here, it leads from Lake Vänern into Lake Svanefjorden and onward to Östervallskog in Värmland. From Köpmannebro, the canal opens up a water system with 31 locks; many journeys north along the canal begin here. This makes Köpmannebro a notable point of reference for travelers interested in the water route and its locks.
The connection between the waterways can also be described precisely: the Upperudsälven flows out of Svanefjorden through Köpmannebro and into Lake Vänern. The canal route and a named outflow meet here, although they do not serve the same function.
Guest harbor and bridge
The guest harbor is located by the first lock gate and offers berths with electricity, toilets, showers and waste disposal. On the opposite side of the canal, there is a waiting quay for boats passing through the lock. Both the harbor and the lock passage are useful landmarks for finding your way around the waterway.
A swing bridge crosses the canal immediately downstream of the lock; its clearance is 2.25 meters. Operating arrangements may vary. If you are planning a passage, check the current arrangements in advance.
Cultural landscape and local history
Köpmannebro is a cultural landscape of bridges, a lock and older buildings. The area around the town is part of the Dalsland Canal area of national interest. If you are interested in the area’s history as well as the canal, the story of its two railway stations offers another historical point of reference.
Köpmannebro’s first railway station was completed in 1880 and remained in use until 1937, when the new station opened. This second station was demolished in 1973; Köpmannebro has had no railway station since then. These dates distinguish between the two stations and their respective roles in local history.
Vibergsön and Ryr Nature Reserve
For Vibergsön, a municipal nature guide from 2009 describes access from the water at some locations. On the eastern part of the island, a passage beneath the railway provides access on foot. A railway bridge over the Dalsland Canal was replaced in 2002; its footpath leads to an island. Check access conditions before visiting.
Ryr Nature Reserve is located on a peninsula near Köpmannebro and covers 102 hectares. Hiking trails connect its separate sections. Ryr therefore offers a different nature experience from the paths along the canal; if you are planning a hike, check trail conditions in advance, as they may change.
