Gustavsfors lies on the Dalsland Canal, on the border between Dalsland and Värmland. When planning a trip, water activities and local history are key considerations: the lock, lakes and guest dock reflect the town’s maritime connections, while trails and historic sites appeal to other interests. If you’re looking for accommodation in Gustavsfors, you can start by considering whether water-based activities or the town’s history will play a bigger role in your stay.

The canal, lakes and trails

Gustavsfors Lock Station is a single-chamber lock and number 23 on the Dalsland Canal. It leads from Lake Lelången to Lake Västra Silen. Boaters can moor at the guest dock when arriving via Västra Silen and Lelången. This connection also sets out a specific condition for planning: mooring is available to those arriving via these two lakes.

Gustavsfors bathing area is on Lake Lelång. The lake is one of the largest in the area and forms part of the Dalsland Canal lake system. This offers different ways to experience the town’s connection to the water: by lock and boat, or at the lakeside bathing area.

Gustavsfors has a canoe rental service and opportunities for fishing. The Dalsland-Nordmarken Canoe Fishing Permit is sold at ICA Optimisten. For hiking, there are two different routes to consider: the second stage of the Lelånge Trail runs from Gustavsfors to Dals Långed; the Vammerviksleden can be started in either Gustavsfors or Vammerviken. Check the route of the Lelånge Trail before setting out. Another activity on land is rail biking: bikes can be rented in Gustavsfors for the disused railway line between Bengtsfors and Kyrkerud (Årjäng).

Industrial history and culture

Gustavsfors has an industrial character, with roots in the 18th century. Gustavsfors Bruksmuseum covers the history of the mill, the local school and boat traffic on the canal. The Norra Kulturkanalen also begins in the old industrial town of Gustavsfors, at its Bruksmuseum. Together, these local sites offer several concrete perspectives on industrial history: work, education and water transport.

Gustavsfors Chapel was built in 1891 by Kyrkans vänner, a local association of the Evangeliska fosterlandsstiftelsen, together with the Missionsförsamlingen. It reflects important aspects of Christian activity in the former industrial community. The chapel also houses the stoneware triptych “Vision i smedjan”, created by Olga Aue-Birkfeldt in 1978. The building’s history, religious life and art complement the town’s industrial themes.

Just outside Gustavsfors, in Mossviken on the shore of Lake Västra Silen, is Vänna Gård. The annual Folk på Vänna festival is held there, bringing the American South and the Appalachians to northern Dalsland. The festival includes a food truck, a bar, homemade Southern cuisine, a country DJ, cornhole lanes and camping on site. As this is a recurring cultural event, it’s advisable to confirm dates and arrangements before travelling.

Getting around town

Gustavsfors guest harbour has 16 berths, a slipway and six parking spaces for harbour guests. ICA Optimistens Lanthandel is a staffed tourist information point, offering basic tourist information, brochures and personal assistance. These local services help visitors with different travel plans, whether they’re staying with a boat or looking for information about the town.
