The Gullspångsälven flows through Gullspång and connects Lake Skagern with Lake Vänern. The town therefore brings together a range of attractions for visitors: protected lower stretches of the river, Laxtrappan, railbike routes, a path through a built-up area, and arts and cultural offerings.

River and fish passage

The lower stretches of the Gullspångsälven have been a Natura 2000 site since 2000 and are also a nature reserve. These designations apply to the lower stretches of the river. Laxtrappan was built in the lower and steepest part of Gullspångsforsen so that salmon and trout can reach their spawning grounds below the sluice gates of the power plant dam.

The fish passage gives the river a tangible connection to nature: its purpose is to let salmon and trout reach the spawning grounds mentioned above. Anyone interested in the Gullspångsälven will find here not only its course between two lakes but also a look at a passage built specifically for fish.

Railbikes and paths

Two routes of different lengths and in different directions are available for railbike rides. The Torvedsbanan is 12.5 kilometres long and runs south from Gullspång along the Gullspångsälven to Midskog. The 38-kilometre Trelänsbanan runs north from Gullspång via Konsterud in southern Kristinehamn to its terminus in Degerfors. The routes differ in length, direction and destination: south along the river to Midskog or north via Konsterud to Degerfors.

You can ride railbikes from the Dressin House in the centre of Gullspång. This gives the activity a specific location in the town centre, while the descriptions of the two routes outline their distinct courses and endpoints.

The Gullspång section of Hälsans stig offers a different way to get around. It is 3.3 kilometres long and runs through a built-up area; the path is lit and cleared of snow in winter. This sets it apart from the railbike routes: here, the path runs through a built-up area, while the named routes lead south or north from Gullspång.
