Ed is situated on a peninsula between Stora Le and Lilla Le, which surrounds Lake Lilla Le. This means that two lakes shape how you find your way around the town. If you are considering Ed for a stay, you can treat the lakeside scenery, trails and culture as distinct aspects of planning your trip.

Lakeside scenery and nature

At the heart of Ed lies Skansenområdet, a nature reserve with diverse flora and a park-like character. It combines protected nature with a location right in the town. Stora Les branter offers a different landscape: this nature reserve is about 8 kilometres north of Ed, on the eastern shore of Stora Le. Here you will find old, rugged trees, rare plants, lichens, mosses and various bird species. The park-like character of Skansenområdet and the natural shoreline at Stora Les branter thus represent different sides of the surrounding area.

The approximately 8-kilometre-long Istidsleden trail explores how this landscape was formed. Information boards explain how the inland ice shaped the area around Ed. The trail is therefore a way to combine a hike with a specific nature-related theme.

Hiking trails by length and character

The trails around Ed differ in length, surface and route. The Orange leden is 3.9 kilometres long and loops around Sågtjärn along forest paths. The 4.6-kilometre-long Vita leden runs along Lilla Le; it follows paths, gravel sections and paved roads through residential areas. The comparison shows two distinct types of route: a loop on forest paths and a trail that connects the lake with residential areas.

The Blåa leden is 11.3 kilometres long. Much of it runs within the town, and the route is gently undulating. The Röda leden is 24.5 kilometres long and goes around the town and north past Tavlan. The different lengths provide a practical guide for planning a shorter loop or a longer route, while the trails remain distinct from one another.

The Gröna Leden also passes a recreation area near Timmertjärn. It has a playground, a multi-purpose court, a shelter, a barbecue hut and jetties. Opposite Motionsgården Tavlan, a path leads to the Brudslöjan waterfall.

Culture and local life

Eds MC- och motormuseum is located in the centre of Ed, in the basement of the Willys grocery store. The museum and store share the same entrance. The collection includes around 150 vintage motorcycles, mopeds and outboard motors from several countries; the museum also displays 300 radios. This makes it a special stop for anyone interested in engines and older technology.

Dals-Eds kyrka stands on elevated ground beside Lilla Le. The church is associated with the medieval tradition of pilgrimages to Nidaros. Here, two different aspects of the town meet by the lake: the scenic shoreline and a place with a religious history.

The market in Ed takes place in spring and autumn. It has been a tradition almost without interruption since 8 October 1949, with the exception of cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The market includes pony rides for children. Traffic through the town centre is closed during the market. Check the dates of the relevant edition when planning your visit.
