When looking for accommodation in Äspered, you can start by deciding whether nature at Tolken, cultural heritage or cycling activities should shape your stay. The themes range from a beech forest in a nature reserve to a church whose interior has been preserved almost unchanged, as well as club activities and a road cycling route. This makes it possible to plan your trip around specific interests.

Nature around Tolken

Sundholmen Nature Reserve is located near Äspered. The protected area, managed by the state, covers 20 hectares and lies on the western shore of Lake Tolken. Sundholmen is near Äspered, by the lake, between Borås and Ulricehamn. In the mainland section of the nature reserve, the Hägnagärdet area, visitors can walk through a beech forest. There is roadside parking at Hägnagärdet near the entrance to the protected area.

The nearest bus stop to the nature reserve is Äspereds kyrka; from there, it is about 2.4 kilometres to the area. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the current timetable. The distance may help with planning, without specifying a walking time.

Church and castle on Holmen

Äspereds kyrka was built between 1860 and 1862. Its interior has been preserved almost unchanged. The chancel’s altar rail, altar screen, number boards and choir stalls are among the fixtures preserved unchanged. In the gallery, the rising wooden rows of seats and the wooden floor have been fully preserved. If you would like to visit the interior, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The castle ruins on the island of Holmen also offer a historical point of interest for a visit near Äspered. Visitors can explore the remains of an old castle there. Its origins date back to the 15th century; it once belonged to the noble Brahe family. The castle fell into ruin in the 17th century before burning down during a thunderstorm in 1706.

Cycling and club activities

The paved Two-Lakes road cycling route runs around the lakes Åsunden and Tolken and is suitable for road bikes as well as regular bicycles. Its highest point is shortly after the route turns off at Äspered. As route details may change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

The youth group is open to children up to and including 16 years of age; no MTB experience is required. Youth training focuses on technique and basic skills, as well as simple trail riding. The activities therefore differ by age group and training focus. Dates and participation requirements may change; it is best to check with the club in advance.

Shoreline, sports and local tradition

Äspereds badplats is on the western shore of Lake Tolken; there is a barbecue area there. If you would rather combine your stay with a visit to the lakeshore than with a forest walk, this offers another local point of interest. For indoor sports, Äsperedshallen on Skolstigen is equipped for gymnastics, football, floorball, handball, basketball, badminton and volleyball. Uses and availability may change, so it is advisable to check in advance if you have specific plans.

Sjötorpskorv is part of the local food culture. Its production in Äspered in connection with the Christmas slaughter, using the same recipe, probably dates back more than 100 years. For almost 50 years, Äspereds hembygdsförening has maintained the tradition of making the sausage using the same recipe for the Christmas market in Sjötorp. This is a distinctive historical connection alongside the church, castle and nature: Äspered can be discovered not only through its landscape and activities, but also through a tradition of production passed down over time.
