Åsarp can be explored through two themes: signposted trails and cultural history, from prehistoric settlements to the church. If you choose accommodation based on cycling and walking opportunities or historical sites, these themes provide practical guidance for planning your trip.

Cycling and Walking Trails in Åsarp

The cycling and walking trail network in Åsarp comprises 50 kilometres of signposted routes. This figure describes the network as a whole, not the length of an individual tour. The Ätradalsleden cycling route passes through Åsarp and Ekehagen, providing a concrete link between the two places.

The surrounding area has around 35 places to visit along the cycling and walking trail network; information boards are available in Swedish, English, and German. The two figures provide different kinds of guidance: 50 kilometres refers to signposted routes, while around 35 refers to places to visit in the area.

Prehistory at Ekehagen

Ekehagen Ancient Village is an open-air archaeological museum with reconstructed settlements from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. More specifically, it represents the hunter-gatherer Stone Age, the farming Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. This distinguishes between two ways of life in the Stone Age before the Bronze and Iron Ages extend the sequence on display.

Visitors can paddle a dugout canoe there. This activity may depend on the seasonal visitor programme, so check the programme for your visit. Ekehagen’s café serves hot meals, sandwiches, homemade cakes, ice cream, and hot and cold drinks.

In the area around Åsarp, beside Ekehagen’s reception building at Alvaredssjön, there are four parking spaces for motorhomes. There is also a barbecue area and a picnic table with benches by the lake.

Åsarp Church and Its History

Åsarp Church is the third church on this site. It was built in 1830 on a medieval church site and remodelled in 1883 to give it its present appearance. This sequence distinguishes the older church site from the later church building and its remodelling. The church has three bells; the middle one comes from the medieval church in Smula.

Historic Houses and Landscape

Fageråsstugan is a typical 19th-century rural setting, with a dwelling house, a barn, and a small cottage. A number of original objects have been preserved in the rooms of the main house.

In the area around Åsarp, southeast of the village, stands the runestone Vg 181, also known as Olsbrostenen. Smula ås is a one-kilometre-long ridge beside the Ätran. These are two distinct points of interest in the area: the ridge by the river and the runestone southeast of the village.

A Landmark at the Northern Entrance to the Village

Alvareds bro is beside the bridge over the Ätran on Road 46, at the northern entrance to Åsarp. Together with the trails and cultural heritage sites, this landmark provides another point of reference for planning your trip.
