Ånimskog lies in the southernmost part of Åmål Municipality, about 20 kilometres south of the main town on the E45. For a stay, you can choose from three distinct highlights: the archipelago landscape on Vänern, trails through forest and mountain areas, and the church and older cultural traces. Vänern is an inland lake, not a Baltic Sea beach. So compare the exact location of your accommodation with the destination you actually want, rather than assuming proximity to water or the coast from the place name.

Yttre Bodane on Vänern

Yttre Bodane is a nature reserve in a wooded archipelago landscape on Vänern. It is home to eleven Bronze Age coastal stone cairns of national significance. The word “coastal” describes their historic location by the lakeshore, not a sea coast. Hiking there therefore brings you into contact with both the landscape and prehistoric traces. Stay on designated trails and treat the stone cairns as protected heritage, not as freely accessible viewpoints.

Kayaking is also mentioned for Yttre Bodane; a launch site is located about 400 metres south of the car park. This location information is useful for planning, but says nothing about current water and weather conditions, kayak rentals or suitability for beginners. If you want to go out on the water, check the equipment, access and conditions yourself for the day of your trip. Accommodation in Ånimskog is not automatically close to the launch site.

Forest trails at Sörknatten and Baståsen

Sörknatten is a nature reserve with mountain and forest scenery and a hiking trail. The Sörknattenleden is 6.5 kilometres long. Baståsen is a different natural area: a steep, broadleaf-forested slope stretches down to Lake Ärr. The Baståsenleden is about six kilometres long and runs partly along the lake. The similar length does not make the two trails interchangeable; the terrain and destinations differ. Check the route, current trail conditions and your preferred starting point before setting out.

Baståsen is also an exceptionally species-rich site for land molluscs in Dalsland. Thirty-two snail species and five slug species have been recorded there. This biological distinction is a reason to visit nature attentively and respectfully, but it does not guarantee that you will see particular species on any one hike. The shared car park at Sörknatten’s northern entrance and an information board help you find your way between the areas.

The church and older traces

The oldest parts of Ånimskog Church were probably built towards the end of the 13th century. Its baptismal font dates from the 13th century; the painted wooden ceiling was made by Hans George Schüffner in 1739. The altarpiece, dating from 1729, is attributed to Nils Falk. These different periods can be considered side by side during a visit to the church. Check opening hours in advance, as the historic furnishings do not mean the church is accessible every day.

Four stone cists, prehistoric stone burial chambers, have also been identified on historic land in Ånimskog. A stone cist in Byn is on private property; visitors should use the designated car park. Respect property boundaries and local guidance if you include these sites in your itinerary.

Choose accommodation based on your destination

A day by Vänern, a hike at Sörknatten or a church visit each calls for a different location. Compare the address of a hotel, holiday home or apartment with the specific car park or trailhead. Prices, availability, amenities and access to the lake or trails must be checked for each listing; the local information does not promise that accommodation is right nearby.
