Kvissleby: Trails, Cultural Heritage and Excursion Destinations

Strandleden between Kvissleby and Njurundabommen is a frequently used walking and cycling path. It is wide and obstacle-free, making it accessible to people who are unable to walk in woodland terrain. Benches and tables are placed along the route, and there is also a sturdy barbecue area. Biotopes have been mapped in the Strandleden area, and several key or profile species have been identified. Biotopes are clearly spatially delineated natural habitats, each with its own ecological conditions.

Trails, Nature, Swimming Areas and Winter Sports

A particularly child-friendly 1.1-kilometre route runs around Fiskdammen. In summer, it is used for walking or running.

Dyket offers another opportunity to spend time outdoors. It is a recreational area in Kvissleby with swimming opportunities in the lake. There is a large and a small bathing jetty. A swimming area is set aside for small children, while older children have access to a swimming platform.

Nolbybacken also expands the range of activities. It offers ski rental, ski servicing, barbecue areas and a café with a wide selection of food and coffee. The competitions range from small events for the youngest skiers to competitions for international elite athletes. This means that the site offers both practical services related to skiing and events for different age and ability groups.

Prehistoric Traces, a Chapel and Old Trails

One of the prominent cultural destinations is Nolby högar, a prehistoric site featuring one of Sweden’s largest burial mounds. The prehistoric focus is complemented by further evidence in the surrounding area.

The ruins of Kvissle Chapel are a destination along Fornstigen. They stand on a moraine ridge beside the old Norrstigen. A moraine ridge is a landform shaped by the Ice Age. Parts of this old route pass through the eastern part of the area of national interest and alongside several burial grounds and the chapel ruins.

Burestenen is considered the best-preserved runestone in the county. A runestone bears an inscription in runic script. It adds another cultural landmark to the prehistoric site and the chapel ruins.

Industrial Heritage and Skittles in Svartvik

Svartvik’s industrial heritage sites can be reached by bus route 120 or via walking and cycling paths from central Sundsvall or from Njurunda. In Svartvik, you can visit historical exhibitions in Stallet. Café Svartvik serves as a visitor centre with tourist information, a shop and guided tours.

At the Kägelbanan in Engelska parken near Svartviks herrgård, you can try playing skittles; free play is offered in summer. The site complements the exhibitions and tours by providing an opportunity to try a traditional game yourself.
