Viksjö near Härnösand is a starting point for excursions to Västanåfallet, Viksjön and the surrounding heights. This is a different kind of trip from a beach holiday on the Baltic Sea. If you are looking for accommodation, first decide whether the waterfall and nature centre, a hike or the swimming area will shape your stay. A hotel or holiday home in the village is not necessarily at the starting point of every trail and does not necessarily have a lake view.

Västanåfallet: nature and local history

Västanåfallet Nature Reserve is in Viksjö, near Route 331. Its main attraction is a waterfall with a total height of 90 metres, described as Sweden’s second-highest. Water flow, weather and trail conditions affect your visit; do not assume a particular view or easy access based on the height alone. Once there, follow marked trails and the reserve’s guidance. This lets you enjoy the waterfall as a natural attraction without leaving sensitive areas for a photo.

At Västanåfallet Nature & Culture Centre, exhibitions provide information about the Västanå ironworks, which operated in the 18th and 19th centuries. A separate exhibition area covers the history of Finnish settlers in the surrounding area. This adds a clear historical context to a visit to the landscape. Works by around twenty craftspeople are sold in the arts and crafts shop. Children aged approximately five to eleven can explore Barnens Naturstig, a nature trail with thirteen stations about animals. These are specific reasons to visit, but current opening hours, guided tours and shop operations should be checked for your travel date. Booking accommodation does not automatically include them.

Viksjön, Hippaberget and the village centre

Viksjöbadet is on Viksjön between Hippaberget and Billberget and can serve as a starting point for climbing either mountain. From Hippaberget, the view stretches across wooded ridges, Viksjön directly below and the Mjällådalen valley. Choose a hike to suit your fitness, the weather and local conditions; the presence of a swimming area does not guarantee safe swimming conditions at all times or an easy mountain trail. Check water quality and access before swimming.

The village also has its own history: Viksjö’s bell tower was originally built in 1724 for Högsjö Church, purchased in 1789 and erected at its present location in 1792. Viksjö Mat & Nostalgi is decorated in the style of the 1950s and 1960s and sells food. Viksjö Folkets hus houses a library with a self-service facility available on all days of the week to people with an access card. For visitors without a suitable card, this does not guarantee that they can use it spontaneously. Ask about the conditions if needed.

Check the accommodation’s location

A practical day plan separates the destinations: the waterfall and exhibitions on one hand, the lake and mountain trail on the other. When considering a specific property, compare its address with these starting points, as well as its access, price and availability. Information about hosts, amenities or family services should come from the relevant listing. This makes it possible to choose Viksjö as a nature and culture destination without overestimating the location of accommodation or the operating status of the facilities.
