Tavelsjö: Lake, Hiking Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Tavelsjö
There are two main focuses for a stay in Tavelsjö: activities on Lake Tavelsjön and hikes along trails of varying lengths. Tavelsjön is 25 metres deep and the largest lake in the municipality of Umeå. In the Umeå Municipality nature inventory, it is classified as Class 1, the highest nature value. The water, trails and local history therefore offer different starting points for choosing what to do during your stay.
At Lake Tavelsjön: Nature and Water
Swimming, boating and fishing are among the leisure activities on and around the lake. Paddling is also possible; canoes, kayaks and SUP boards can be rented from Tavelsjö kanot & kajak. If you are planning to rent a particular type of equipment, check availability before your trip. This offers a choice of activities both on the water and in it—you can decide based on whether you prefer swimming or a trip out on the lake.
Hiking: Mountain Trails, a Circular Route or a Long-Distance Trail
Tio Toppar Tavelsjö offers marked trails to ten mountains. The hikes range from 0.5 to 2.1 kilometres one way, with stated elevation gains of 42 to 165 metres. When planning your outings, you can use trail length and elevation gain as two separate points of reference. Trail conditions and parking options may vary seasonally.
Tavelsjön Runt is an approximately 23-kilometre circular route around the lake, used for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. There are several rest areas along the route, and detours lead to viewpoints by the lake or on the surrounding mountains. Large sections of the route are adapted for accessibility. With its approximate length and three possible activities, the circular route differs from the individual hikes to the ten mountains.
Tavelsjöleden offers a different type of route: this 42-kilometre hiking trail runs from central Umeå to Tavelsjö and connects with Vännforsleden and Vindelälvsleden. This means you can choose between a circular route around the lake and a trail linking Umeå and Tavelsjö.
Winter and Local History
In winter, the Tavelsjö AIK ice rink is a seasonal option. The 9-kilometre skating track is used from November to March; conditions may vary from one winter to the next. A regional bus runs to the ice rink on Saturdays and Sundays. Since weekend service and timetables are seasonal, it is advisable to check the current timetable before travelling.
Tavelsjö Church offers a historical connection. It was inaugurated in 1965 and stands on the same site as the former 19th-century church. This provides two points of reference in the history of the church site: the inauguration of the current building and the former church that stood in the same place.
Tavelsjön Runt combines a circular route with several ways to enjoy it, while Tavelsjöleden is a 42-kilometre hiking connection from central Umeå to Tavelsjö. Choosing your preferred season and route type can help you begin your search for hotels in Tavelsjö.
