Sorsele on the Vindelälven: River, trails and culture
Accommodation in Sorsele
Sorsele lies partly on an island in the middle of the Vindelälven. The river provides a clear landmark for finding your way around town: a promenade runs along its bank, and the church tower is visible from a great distance as you approach. At the municipal level, the Vindelälven flows through the entire area and on to the coast. The town’s partial island setting and the river’s course across the municipality therefore represent two different scales.
The Vindelälven and outdoor trails
For a walk in the centre, Hälsans stig is an easy-to-follow circular route. There is also a hilly, floodlit running and exercise trail that can be used for exercise and recreation all year round: in the snow-free season, it is used for walking and running; in winter, for cross-country skiing. The season therefore matters when choosing an activity: the circular route in the centre is available year-round, while activities on the other trail change with the seasons.
Stensundsforsen is a rapid on the Vindelälven where grayling can be fished, just a short walk from the centre. The nature-oriented, easy-to-walk Skibbikkleden trail leads from Sorsele to Skibbikken. There, a sandy beach on the Vindelälven has shallow water suitable for swimming. A hike and a swimming stop can therefore be enjoyed as two parts of the same outing.
From Skibbikkeudden, there are sweeping views over Nedre Gauträsket, the southern part of Storvindeln. The view there takes in named bodies of water, while the promenade follows the Vindelälven. The Brudslöjan waterfall lies west of the village of Svarttjärn, about halfway between Ammarnäs and Sorsele; the trail there is about one kilometre long and steep in places.
Local history and museum visits
The Inlandsbanemuseet is housed in the old freight depot of Sorsele railway station and focuses on working life and everyday history. Its exhibition explores the history and construction of the 1,289-kilometre-long Inlandsbanan. The museum is open seasonally; in 2026, the season began on 1 June and included the summer opening period. Check the latest opening information before visiting.
The present-day Sorsele kyrka was built in 1859–1860. From 1 July, the Åttkantslogen in the Sorsele Hembygdsgårdsområde houses a local heritage museum where visitors can learn about the history of the municipality. Visitors can walk around the small lake, learn about the historic buildings and their history, and enjoy views of the Vindelälven.
