Skellefteå offers several clear starting points for planning your trip: Bonnstan represents the history of the church town, Nordanå is a venue for culture and events, and Hälsans Stig runs along the river through the city centre. This lets you give different weight to historic sites, cultural events and physical activity, rather than planning your stay around just one theme.

Bonnstan and the history of the church town

Bonnstan dates back to the 17th century. The site comprises 116 church town houses with a total of 392 chambers. This gives a sense of both the site’s historical depth and its scale—two aspects that make Bonnstan a distinctive focus for history. If you are interested in the history of church towns, this site offers a concrete point of interest for your stay.

Every year, Bonnstan hosts a church weekend, a market and a traditional Midsummer celebration. Nordanå, a cultural and outdoor venue near the centre, has a history dating back to the 14th century. Today, the site is used for festivals, summer theatre and a Christmas market, among other things. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival or performance, check the dates in advance.

Cultural venues with different focuses

Sara Kulturhus is in the heart of Skellefteå and is one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings. Exploratoriet offers a different focus: it is a science centre with 800 square metres of exhibition space across three floors. The two destinations appeal to different interests: timber construction at Sara Kulturhus and science at Exploratoriet. Together, they add further cultural themes to your trip planning alongside the historic sites and events.

Walking trails and riverside orientation

Hälsans Stig is a seven-kilometre walking trail along the river through central Skellefteå. It runs from Älvsbackabron in the east to Lejonströmsbron in the west. The bridge at the western end was built in 1737 and is Sweden’s oldest and longest wooden bridge still in use. The trail can be understood in terms of its length, riverside setting and two named endpoints.

Mineralleden offers a different way to orient yourself: it starts at the illuminated Vitbergets ski trail and continues from there towards Skellefteå AdventurePark and Varuträsk Vildmarksgruva. In comparison, Hälsans Stig is defined by its length and route through the city centre; for Mineralleden, the starting point and direction towards two named destinations provide orientation. Which details matter most to you depends on whether you want to include a central walking trail or the destinations mentioned along Mineralleden in your plans.
