Råstrand lies on the Vindelälven and offers a range of ways to spend your stay: observing nature, enjoying activities on the water and exploring traces of history. When choosing accommodation, it may be useful to consider whether you want to focus on birdlife, forest walks, river activities or local history. The landscape around Råstrand includes forests, waterways, mountains and wetlands. The river is therefore an important focal point, but it is not the only natural setting to enjoy during your stay.

Landscape and birdwatching

During the spring migration, the area around Råstrand is often visited by birdwatchers because of its diverse birdlife. This gives nature watching a specific seasonal focus. If birdwatching is the main reason for your trip, you can use this time of year to help plan your visit. This seasonal focus sets it apart from activities that emphasize other features of the surroundings.

River, canoeing and beach

On the Vindelälven near Råstrand, you can fish in rapids and calmer stretches of river. The two types of water offer different experiences; permits are required for fishing. Canoeing and kayaking are other possible activities in Råstrand. Their practical availability may change, so it is advisable to check before planning your trip.

At Bojmosavan, just after the turnoff from Route 363, there is a sandy beach with shallow water. Beach conditions are seasonal. The two waterfront settings therefore offer different experiences: fishing in rapids and calmer stretches on the Vindelälven, and a sandy beach with shallow water at Bojmosavan. When choosing a water-based experience, it is important to decide whether river fishing or the beach is your priority.

Forest and views of the village

Forest walks are possible in Råstrand. Berry and mushroom picking are also activities here, and are seasonal. Walking focuses on spending time in the forest, while picking is tied to the season. Kåtabostugan offers a lovely view of Råstrand. As well as walking in the forest, taking in views of the village itself can also shape your stay.

Traces of history

According to local historical tradition, Hans Nilsson is said to have settled in Råstrand around 1792. Local historical accounts say that Råstrand was recognized as an independent village in 1796. The reported settlement around 1792 took place a few years before the 1796 recognition; one account concerns a person, the other the village’s status. Stone Age sites are said to be located on the south side of the Vindelälven. This possible archaeological trace adds to the accounts of the village’s history.

The advice on when to travel varies: birdwatchers often visit the area during the spring migration, while berry and mushroom picking and beach conditions are seasonal. Check the practical availability of canoeing and kayaking in advance; fishing requires permits. This makes it possible to consider your interests in nature, the season and any necessary preparations together.
