Norrfors on the Lögdeälven: Hiking and Architectural History
Accommodation in Norrfors
On the Lögdeälven, Norrfors brings together river scenery, hiking trails, and historic wooden architecture. For active days, the Lögdeälvsleden is a specific point of reference; there are also other routes of varying lengths. Norrfors kyrka adds a precisely datable architectural history to the picture. You can plan around route length and trail type; the church provides a cultural highlight.
Hiking trails by length and type
The Norrfors–Lillnäset section of the Lögdeälvsleden is 9.5 km long. Starting in Norrfors, it begins on a gravel road and then crosses higher terrain onto a narrower trail. When planning this stage, you can therefore take into account both the distance and the change from gravel to a narrower trail. On a trail near Norrfors, hikers pass beneath railway bridges dating from 1890 and 1969.
A municipal tourism description from 2015 mentions a 15 km route between Norrfors and Brattsbacka that can be used in daylight; check its current condition before setting out. A municipal brochure from 2015 also mentions a 5 km summer route in Norrfors. The Norrfors elljusspår is 2.5 km long, illuminated, and free of charge. Check current trail conditions before you travel.
The route lengths are easy to compare: 2.5 km for the elljusspår, 5 km for the summer route, 9.5 km on the section to Lillnäset, and 15 km between Norrfors and Brattsbacka. These are different routes; the daylight information is reported for the 15 km route, while the 5 km route is described as a summer route.
Riverside setting and architectural history
Norrfors is situated on the Lögdeälven. Norrfors kyrka is about 100 metres from the rushing water. Built of wood in a blend of 1920s Classicism and Baroque, it was constructed in 1922–1923 to plans by architect Knut Nordenskjöld. The churchyard also retains a well-preserved period character and period planting. The building’s design, its architect, and the churchyard landscaping offer several points of interest for anyone interested in local architectural history as well as the hiking trails.
Getting oriented during your stay
There is an overnight cabin in Norrfors. It can be reached via a 200-metre detour at the suspension bridge by Nedre Älgforsen. Norrfors also has a wind shelter with a barbecue area. For the Lögdeälvsleden, you can park below the bridge by the wind shelter or near the Svartforsen rest area, on the gravel road farther upstream. There is also a barbecue hut and a motorhome parking space at Svartforsen. The information thus identifies two different parking landmarks: the area by the bridge and wind shelter in Norrfors, and the Svartforsen rest area.
A few times each summer, pizza and barbecue evenings are held at Norrforsgården. Check the specific dates before your trip. This lets you consider hiking plans, the river scenery, and a possible seasonal evening visit as separate aspects of your stay.
