Saxnäs is a mountain village on the shore of Lake Kultsjön, situated along the Wilderness Road amid mountain scenery close to the road. There are many lakes in the surrounding area. Hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing and art offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Hiking between forest and fjell

Around Saxnäs, trails and paths run through old-growth forest and into the alpine high-mountain landscape. The nearby Marsfjället Nature Reserve encompasses open fjell, fjell birch forest, high-altitude marsh plateaus and primeval forest. The scenery thus ranges from forested areas to open fjell and marshes. If you are looking for particular types of scenery on an excursion, these differences can help guide you.

A six-kilometre road leads from Saxnäs to the entrance of Satsfjället Nature Reserve; visitors can park at Satsfjället and go hiking. The combination of a named access point and a hiking option gives the natural area a practical connection to planning your stay: you can consider Saxnäs and Satsfjället together if you would like to include a hike in the surrounding area.

Parts of the Konstleden trail between Borgafjäll and Saxnäs are challenging. The route features a signpost artwork made of stone and glass. This trail therefore combines an experience of the landscape with a specific connection to art. If you are considering the Konstleden, take note of the challenging sections when planning your hike.

Both the Lapplandsleden and the Marsfjällsleder can be accessed from Saxnäsgården in Saxnäs. Seasonal conditions may affect how practical they are to use. These two named routes offer another point of reference if you would like to plan excursions starting from Saxnäs.

Cross-country skiing in season

Cross-country skiing is normally possible in Saxnäs from November to May. The village has 19 kilometres of interconnected ski trails, including a 2.5-kilometre illuminated loop. The shorter illuminated loop is a separate option within the larger trail network. The stated distances may change if the trail system is redesigned. If cross-country skiing influences when you travel, the usual season is a helpful guide.

Art and history in Saxnäs

Ricklundgården is a museum and artist residency in Saxnäs. Its international artist residency programme has two studios and welcomes visiting artists from around the world. Emma and Folke Ricklund established Ricklundgården in the late 1940s. The museum and residency programme thus connect a historical setting with the international focus of today’s artist residency.

The history of the village also spans different periods: the first new settlement in Saxnäs was established in 1824, and tourism developed rapidly there from the 1930s onwards. These two historical reference points range from early settlement to the later growth of tourism.
