In Dorotea, trails differ in length, surface and elevation profile; there are also winter ski trails and cultural attractions with their own distinct themes. At Lake Bergvattensjön, nature watching and circular trails take centre stage, while Kullerbacken and the museums offer insights into local and cultural history. You can plan your days around outdoor exercise, winter activities or visits to historic and artistic sites.

Circular Trails, Lake and Views

The Sjöslingan is an easy, illuminated circular trail of about 3.3 kilometres around Lake Bergvattensjön, centrally located in Dorotea. The lake is known for its rich birdlife. The route combines a manageable loop with a landscape that is also interesting for nature watching. The Kullerbacksrundan has varied surfaces: it runs along a gravel fitness trail, through spruce forest and over a boardwalk across marshland. Along the way, there is a view over Dorotea before the trail descends to the Kullerbacken heritage area. The different surfaces and viewpoint give this loop a character distinct from the lakeside trail.

The Lakeside Walk in Dorotea is fully accessible with a pushchair. Several fire pits along the trail provide places to take a break. Trail conditions and facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

Winter Ski Trails with Different Profiles

At Björnvallen, there are two illuminated forest ski trails, 800 metres and 1.5 kilometres long. They have gentle inclines. The five-kilometre trail there is quite different: it runs through forest terrain, is groomed for classic-style skiing during the day, has steep inclines and is not recommended for beginners. This means there are short routes with gentle climbs as well as a longer, more challenging option. Bergvattensjöns elljusspår is also an illuminated forest ski trail; it is about 3.3 kilometres long and gently undulating. The information on length and profile helps you choose a trail based on the time you have and the terrain you prefer.

Local History and Art in Dorotea

Hembygdsgården Kullerbacken is an open-air local history site behind Dorotea kyrka. Its historic buildings include a house from the late 18th century, the oldest on the site. Other buildings and structures include a hexagonal barn, a Sámi kåta and a njalla storehouse. Several of the houses contain exhibitions of clothing, tools and objects that illustrate different occupations and social classes. The site can therefore be explored not only through individual buildings, but also through the everyday objects brought together there.

Dorotea kyrka was designed by Evert Milles; the church interior contains sculptures by Carl Milles. “Nattvarden” by Björn Martinius can also be seen in the cemetery chapel. Four of the 13 artworks on Konstvägen Sju Älvar are in Dorotea. Another work, the Doroteadrottning by Lasse Åberg, hangs on the wall of Strandenskolan, next to the library.

Museum and Library

The Husvagnsmuseet tells the story of the caravan, from the third one ever made to models from the 1990s. The story is also connected to Dorotea: after a fire at the original factory in Junsele, caravan production was moved to Dorotea. The museum is located on the eastern side of Dorotea, along the E45 European route. Its location and production history give the exhibits a concrete connection to the region, without the vehicles themselves having to be the sole focus.

The Dorotea bibliotek building is designed to look like an open book. The library hosts exhibitions and cultural events; the programme may vary. The building also houses, among other things, Helmer Grundström’s book collection and original paintings by Anna-Lisa Grundström. Its architecture, events and collections offer different reasons to visit for a cultural experience.

Historic Trails and Prästhällan

The Kyrkstigen was once used by residents of Avaträsk to get to the church in Dorotea. The trail begins at a barbecue area at the entrance to Avaträsk and ends at Kullerbacken; it can be walked in either direction. There are two shelters along the Kyrkstigen. Its historic use and two endpoints make it a different kind of trail experience from the circular routes around Lake Bergvattensjön.

The trail to Prästhällan is signposted from Hotell Dorotea; it is a 500-metre walk to the viewpoint. Prästhällan lies on the eastern side of Lake Bergvattensjön. The hill was originally called Oxhornsberget. These details provide clear guidance for the short walk to the viewpoint, without equating it with the longer circular trails.
