Hiking Trails and Striking Landscapes

Lapplandsleden is a 19 Swedish mile-long ski and hiking route connecting Borgafjäll and Hemavan. One starting point is in Borgafjäll, where the southern boundary of the landscape of Lapland runs. Hikers and skiers cross Korpådalen in the Norra Borgafjällen Nature Reserve on Lapplandsleden. Lillfjällsleden crosses the Kalfjäll, follows the shore of Borgasjön, and passes through old-growth forest and mountain birch forest. For Lapplandsleden, the focus is on its connection, length and use as a ski and hiking route; for Lillfjällsleden, it is on the sequence of Kalfjäll, lakeshore and forest.

The Storfallet Trail starts at the waterworks in Borgafjäll and ends at Storfallet. The marked hiking trail to Borgahällan starts at Borgadammen; trail conditions can vary by season. Borgahällan lies on the south side of Borgasjön and, at 1,149 m, is one of the most prominent peaks in the Borgafjäll area. Its nearly vertical rock face is 700 m high. From Borgahällan, you can see the village of Borgafjäll and Klöverfjället. The landmarks for orientation also differ: the Storfallet Trail has a named start and end point, while the trail to Borgahällan has a starting point and a summit as its destination.

Art and Sámi History

Konstvägen Sju Älvar has a different focus from the ski and hiking routes. This 35 Swedish mile-long art exhibition runs from Holmsund on the east coast to Borgafjäll in the mountain regions of South Lapland. The route and details of the artworks may change. Here, art takes centre stage, while Lapplandsleden connects Borgafjäll and Hemavan as a ski and hiking route.

Sutme Sameviste has been inhabited for at least 200 years and served as a summer and autumn residence for Sámi from Borgafjäll and Storjola. Storviken is an old Sámi summer camp where you can see various types of buildings. The two places represent different aspects of Sámi history: Sutme reflects long-term habitation and seasonal use, while Storviken is a summer camp with buildings that can still be seen.

Avasjö Chapel in Borgafjäll also offers a connection to architecture. It was designed by Ralph Erskine and architects Sören Wimmerström and Ulf Oelrik. If you are coming from the direction of Dorotea, the chapel is on the right side of the main road, a few hundred metres past the Borgafjäll Hotell. If you would like to consider architecture alongside nature and Sámi history, the chapel offers another attraction with a specific location.

Fishing and Mountain Snorkelling

Many fishing waters around Borgafjäll can be reached via snowmobile trails; be sure to observe restricted areas. If you are heading to a particular body of water, check the trails and restricted areas before setting out. Mountain snorkelling in Borgafjäll involves guided tours beneath the surface of a lake or river in South Swedish Lapland. Seasonal operations may vary, so check whether tours run during your travel dates. The two water-based experiences differ in what you need to consider: for fishing, trails and restricted areas matter; for mountain snorkelling, it is the seasonal availability of guided tours.
