River and nature activities

Östa Nature Reserve is ten minutes from the centre of Tärnsjö and has miles of sandy beaches along the Dalälven. In the reserve, you can swim, hike, paddle, fish, watch birds and camp. There are several different options: activities on the water, walking, nature watching and camping. Check local conditions for activities and facilities when planning your visit.

Trails with different points of interest

Ljusbäcksleden is a historic church trail that was already in use in the 18th century. Its long history of use may interest travellers who want to consider a trail’s historic connections as well as hiking. Along Kyrkstigen, there are wind shelters with barbecue areas at Skekarsbo and Nordmyran, as well as a charcoal burner’s hut with a barbecue area at Messkog. The two trails offer different points of interest: Ljusbäcksleden is notable for its historic use, while Kyrkstigen has specific shelters and barbecue areas.

Craftsmanship and local culture

Tärnsjö Garveri has been operating at the same site in Tärnsjö since 1873. Since 1988, the tannery has used exclusively vegetable tanning with bark extracts. The dates refer to two different things: 1873 marks the start of operations at the site, while 1988 marks the tanning method. The leather is made locally under one roof—from raw hides from local slaughterhouses to the finished product. This places the craft in context through both its history at the site and its specific production process. Bark extracts provide the vegetable tanning agent.

Another cultural attraction is the Olof Krans Museum, located in Tärnsjö’s old railway station building.

Amenities and getting around town

Tärnsjö has a grocery store, retail shops, a library, restaurants and a café; the cinema is located in Folkets hus. This means that, alongside nature and trails, shopping, dining, the library and cinema are also options in town. Which of these amenities matters for your stay may vary depending on your travel plans. As some services may change, check the ones you need before travelling.
