Skärplinge: River Landscape and Cultural History
Accommodation in Skärplinge
Skärplinge can be understood through its river landscape and its continuous development from a medieval marketplace to today’s commercial center. In the eastern part of the town, the Strömarån runs through the area; there it widens into a dam and a weir with a drop. To the north and south of Skärplinge, a flat agricultural landscape opens up. The river course and agricultural land provide distinct spatial points of reference for finding your way around the town.
Historical Traces and the Development of the Town
Skärplinge has significant cultural and historical value. Its development extends continuously from a medieval marketplace through a large historic village to today’s commercial center. Köpstaden, the medieval marketplace, was located in the northern part of Skärplinge, east of the river. Today’s center is concentrated around a square at the intersection of Tierpsvägen and Gävlevägen. Köpstaden and the present-day center thus represent different points of reference within this development.
Church, Mill and Places of Remembrance
Österlövsta kyrka traces the town’s history through a building spanning several centuries. The brick church was inaugurated in 1451 and has a nave with a chancel. It was burned down by the Russians in 1719 and was not completed again until 1726. A burial chapel was subsequently built for Charles De Geer, the church’s patron, between 1731 and 1733.
The mill on the Strömarån in Skärplinge also has a clearly documented construction date: it was built of brick on a slag-stone foundation in 1888. Gammelgården, the parish local history museum, lies to the northwest. At Hembygdsgården, outside the cultural heritage area, there is a burial ground of which only three graves are visible today.
