Knivsta is ideal for a trip combining walks, nature watching, cycling and culture. Options range from trails along lakes and through natural areas to historic buildings, self-guided walks and activities at Knivsta Centrum för idrott och kultur. This allows you to plan your days around scenery, exercise or history.

Hiking between trails, water and nature

One option for longer hikes is Upplandsleden stage 1:2. It starts in Knivsta C on the east side of the railway line at Knivsta station and ends at Forsbyån. Another stage of the Upplandsleden passes Branthammarsjön. There, you will find a shelter and a fire pit with a beautiful view of the water. Depending on your personal interests, you can include either a hike through the surrounding area or time by the lake in your plans.

Natural areas with shores, woodland and old meadow and pastureland can also be found close to the centre. These include the Gredelby hagar nature reserve and Trunsta träsk. The birdwatching tower offers a good view over the landscape, while also providing an opportunity to observe the rich birdlife at Trunsta Träsk. The Tree Walk introduces 20 common Swedish tree species that grow in and around the communities of Knivsta and Alsike.

Lake activities and active days

Särstabadet is a bathing spot centrally located in Knivsta, on Lake Valloxen. Särstabadet also has a nine-hole adventure course. There is a fee, and you collect the equipment at the counter of Granna restaurang och café. Those focusing on cycling will find an MTB circuit in Knivsta with approximately five kilometres of trail riding. The route includes both easy-to-ride and challenging sections. At the bike park, you can practise jumps and drops in a varied and fast-paced setting.

Discover historic Knivsta

S:t Stefans kyrka, also known as Knivsta gamla kyrka, was consecrated in 1303. It is a Gothic single-nave church made of grey stone; brick ornaments can be found on the gables, around the windows and at the entrances. Sockenmagasinet stands beside the old church. The building was constructed in 1758 and is now the local heritage association’s museum, featuring historic farming implements and other points of interest.

The railway station building is also part of the town’s history: it is the last of these standardised station houses still standing in its original location. A marked trail around Broborg also runs through the Knivsta area and continues into the hill fort. This offers an additional focus for an outing in the surrounding area alongside the town’s history.

Art, architecture and local stories

Knivsta Centrum för idrott och kultur, known as CIK, has a performing arts venue with 398 seats, including six accessible seats. CIK displays four artistic installations as well as standalone works from the Knivsta municipal art collection. Those who want to experience the town through its more recent culture can combine these art-related sites with a walk.

The self-guided walk “Knivsta förr och nu” presents the story of Knivsta personality Lennart Runnding about Knivsta in the past. “Konst och arkitektur i Knivsta” takes visitors through the centre of Knivsta with cultural strategist Jon Hulander. On this central walking tour, you follow a map and click the relevant link at each stop. If you would like to stay overnight in Knivsta, you can plan your days specifically around nature, exercise or culture and then look for a suitable hotel for your trip.
