In Älvkarleby, in Uppsala County, the Dalälven provides a clear focus for a stay: river channels, bridges and Laxön bring the landscape together with the area’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel, holiday apartment or holiday home, you can choose between walks, cultural attractions and a stay planned specifically around fishing.

Laxön: more than a viewpoint

Laxön lies in the middle of the Älvkarleby rapids. For more than a hundred years, engineer troops used the island as a summer camp to practise building bridges over fast-flowing water. This historical connection explains why the island is interesting to visit for more than just its scenery.

Most of its buildings were constructed in the late 19th century and have been renovated. The municipal visitor information also mentions places to eat and have coffee, as well as arts and crafts. Check specifically which businesses will actually be open on your dates; the general description is not a single opening schedule for all the buildings.

Bridges and marked riverside walks

The bridges near Älvkarleby offer views over the rapids and river channels. The area has several footbridges and paths adapted for different uses, including access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. However, this does not mean that every possible circular route has the same conditions throughout. Choose the specific section to suit your needs.

Kungarnas promenad offers several walks marked on the map. Information boards and QR codes reveal stories about Swedish kings’ connections with Älvkarleby; you can listen to related information on a smartphone. Check whether the audio feature is available if you are specifically planning your walk around it.

The Upplandsleden also reaches Älvkarleby from the south and crosses the Dalälven here via the bridges. This hiking trail is distinct from a short local loop chosen at random. The river crossing can serve as a point of reference without implying an unsupported total length.

The church and Gammelgården as cultural attractions

Älvkarleby kyrka is the oldest church in its parish and was built in the late Middle Ages. Gammelgården is opposite. This proximity helps you include both attractions in a visit to the area; it says nothing about whether their opening hours coincide.

Byss-Calle, whose real name was Carl Ersson Bössa, is also part of the area’s cultural history. The nyckelharpa player lived from 1793 to 1847 and came from Östanå in Älvkarleby parish. His biography is a connection to the region, not an announcement of a current concert.

Plan your fishing stay and accommodation to suit

The sport fishing area described extends approximately nine kilometres from the Älvkarleby rapids to the river mouth at the sea. Section A includes about one kilometre of rapids near the falls; fishing there is mainly from the riverbank. The nine kilometres therefore refers to the larger area, not just this section.

The current fishing regulations and the access you actually want still need to be clarified. Compare these with the specific accommodation address. Booking in Älvkarleby does not confirm access to a private fishing spot or include any fishing rights.
