Tyresö between nature reserves, archipelago landscape and cultural history

In Tyresö lies the Alby Nature Reserve by Lake Albysjön, about three kilometres from the centre. The area includes a recreation facility, bathing spots and valuable natural features.

Nature

The Alby recreation area by Lake Albysjön combines bathing spots with barbecue areas, walking trails, fitness trails and large lawns for various activities. The landscape of the Alby Nature Reserve is characterised by deep valleys, extensive clay deposits and ridges with moraine deposits. There are also exposed, nutrient-poor rocky areas with gnarled pines, as well as oaks and hazel bushes in places.

The reserve can be reached on foot and by bicycle; from the Nyfors bus stop, it is about 500 metres away. The trail loop at Nyfors is 1.5 kilometres long in total and leads to a waterfall with a five-metre drop. The third stage of the Sörmlandsleden begins at the Alby recreation area or the Alby Nature Reserve. It passes through a depression, across a moor with a cold spring, continues over rocky areas and into Tyresta National Park.

Trails

Several pilgrimage trails for all age groups start at the Stockholm Pilgrimscentrum in Tyresö. The trails are just under 3 to 15 kilometres long and are partly marked in the landscape. The nature tours in Tyresö also include six self-guided walks and accompanying booklets for areas accessible by wheelchair or walker.

Tyresta National Park and Tyresta Nature Reserve can be reached from Tyresö; there are several entrances to the national park in Tyresö. Tyresta Nature Reserve has a pram-friendly trail, a barbecue area, a rest shelter, a café and Nationalparkernas hus with exhibitions and guided tours. The forests of Tyresta have retained their character as primeval forests and include trees of different ages and species. The diversity of mosses, lichens and fungi is particularly great.

Culture

Tyresö Castle and park form a well-preserved cultural and historical environment of national interest. The main building of the castle houses a museum showing how the castle’s and estate’s last private owner lived around the turn of the 20th century. Notholmen can be reached via a bridge from the castle park and offers bathing spots, fishing from the rocks, picnic areas, a café and a guest harbour.

Notholmen Café offers light meals, coffee, cakes and ice cream, with seating indoors and outdoors. Food and drinks are served there all year round. Ahlstorp båtsmanstorp is a well-preserved cultural and historical environment within a nature reserve and along the Sörmlandsleden. The small red dwelling with outbuildings and meadow represents a typical crofter’s farm or torp environment.

Uddby kvarn och kraftverk is an industrial-historical site with remains of various former activities and a functioning power plant. Uddby gård is the flagship farm of Tyresö Municipality. Various animals live there and help keep the landscape open.

Coast

At Dyviks lövängar, you can go for walks and swim from the rocky shore by Ällmorafjärden. Klövberget offers opportunities for cliff bathing and beautiful views over Kalvfjärden.

Sandholmarna Nature Reserve includes a mainland section, the islands of Stora Sandholmen and Lilla Sandholmen, and part of Erstaviken. It forms a relatively untouched archipelago landscape in the Stockholm archipelago. The nature reserve on the Brevik Peninsula consists of rocky-ground forest, a fault scarp with valuable broadleaf forest and a cave system. Another nature reserve forms a headland in the western part of Kalvfjärden and has high natural values as well as considerable importance for local recreation.
