Sollentuna: Nature Reserves, Trails and Cultural History

In Sollentuna, the Östra Järvafältet Nature Reserve comprises the part of Järvafältet belonging to Sollentuna. It combines farmland and pasture with deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands and lakes.

Nature

The Östra Järvafältet Nature Reserve has marked trails and paths for hiking, horseback riding and skiing. Picnic areas, rest huts and cafés complement the trails in the protected area.

The Rösjöskogen Nature Reserve includes Lake Rösjön, with easily accessible shores, old-growth coniferous forests and open cultural landscapes bearing traces from the Bronze Age. In the Tegelhagsskogen Nature Reserve, easily accessible trails lead through forest and open landscape and along Edsviken; there are swimming areas and equipped barbecue sites there.

Hiking and Cycling

Several trails provide different ways to explore the landscape. Törnskogen runt is an approximately 9-kilometre hiking trail through the northern and southern nature reserves of Törnskogen. The Rösjön runt loop trail passes lichen-covered rock surfaces, oak trees, beaches and meadows. The long-distance Roslagsleden trail runs through Rösjöskogen; this section is marked in orange.

Bus route 527 runs from Sollentuna commuter railway station into the Törnskogen area. The Järva cycle trail passes through Sollentuna and forms a ring route of up to 70 kilometres, connecting urban, cultural and natural areas between Ulriksdal and Rotebro. The route can be started at several stations around Järvafältet and passes old farmsteads and cultivated land.

History

The reconstructed LÃ¥ngbroleden is a trail dating from the Viking Age. Near Snuggan, it is marked by an 11th-century runestone.

Landsnora Mill and Sawmill is a water-powered mill built around 1630 and considered Sollentuna’s oldest secular building. Milling resumed in Landsnora in 1986; the mill and sawmill are open to the public. The water-powered frame sawmill operates during the annual Mill Days and can saw large logs.

Two Mill Days are held at the Överby Windmill every year, one in spring and one in autumn. During these events, grain is ground into flour.

Culture

Edsberg Palace was built in 1760 and preserves furniture and interior furnishings showing what the house looked like during the Rudbeck family’s almost 200-year period of residence. Edsberg Palace is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00; admission is free.

Edsbergsparken is a place for walking and picnicking. A viewpoint offers outdoor fitness equipment, a playground and an observation deck overlooking Edsviken.

Stallbacken kultur is housed in a former barn and offers art exhibitions and cultural activities. These include Thursday lunchtime programmes, concerts, performances and Funkisallsång, an inclusive group sing-along.

Klasro School Museum is located in Sollentuna’s oldest schoolhouse, built in 1804. At the museum, visitors can experience a historic school day and try writing in a sandbox.

Engelska parken contains 114 graves and is considered Sweden’s oldest maintained burial ground. Hersby hembygdsgård preserves the layout of a typical farm in Uppland, with stone residential buildings and wooden farm buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Seasons and Events

Väsjöbacken has four ski runs and five lifts, as well as a children’s slope. There is also a fun park with rails and a half-pipe for tricks on snowboards and skis.

A Midsummer celebration is held every year at Hersby hembygdsgård. Edsbacka Market takes place every September in Edsvik in Sollentuna.

Bögs gård has heated shelters, equipped barbecue sites and a car park in the immediate vicinity.
